REVIEW: "SEVERED" (Cloud Prophet Trilogy, Book 3) - by Megg Jensen

SEVERED
(Cloud Prophet Trilogy, Book 3)
by Megg Jensen

REVIEWED BY: Books4Tomorrow

OVERVIEW

Reychel knows her gift of prophecy will lead to madness and now she is at her most vulnerable. The enemy army will attempt to sever her from everything she's ever known: her homeland, her friends, Mark, and her gift. Even at her weakest, she refuses to give up on her desire to end the war between the Malborn and the Serenians. Reychel would do anything, even come back from the dead, to conquer the enemy and reunite with Mark.

REVIEW

I read the first book in this trilogy the last month of 2010, and the follow-up much later in 2011. It took me some time to get around to reading this last instalment in the Cloud Prophet Trilogy as I felt slightly disappointed with the second book and I considered not reading the last book in the series. However, I’m really glad I read the last book, as it tied up all the loose ends and had a pretty good ending.

But, as much as I enjoyed Severed, it had the potential to be so much better. Not much was done in the way of world building, which is one of the things I enjoyed so much in Anathema. More focus was placed on Reychel and Mark and their love for each other, but I honestly couldn’t tell what she saw in Mark. He came across as someone who hot-footed around Reychel all the time and his only role in the story was as Reychel’s love interest – not much of a stand-alone character. I enjoyed the relationship between Krissen and Ace much more. Krissen remained the fun character from the previous two books, and Ace is a well-rounded, strong character who isn’t afraid to speak his mind. Pity he had such a small role in this book. These two characters are really what made Severed such an enjoyable read.

Reychel was again faced with impossible choices, and her strength of character was tested as the weight of her peoples’ fate rested squarely on her decisions.  The plot moved at a faster pace than it did in Oubliette and is filled with more mystery and revelations than in its predecessor. Anathema still remains my favorite of the three books in this trilogy and I felt the author never quite managed to recapture the magic of the first book, but at least Severed wasn’t the disappointment I was expecting it to be after having read Oubliette. I give it four stars as it exceeded my expectations and the finale was better than I hoped it would be.

REVIEW: "DISSIDENCE" - by Jamie Canosa

DISSIDENCE
by Jamie Canosa

REVIEWED BY: Books4Tomorrow

OVERVIEW

In dystopian America, sixteen-year-old Kaleigh finds out quickly what having a big mouth and not enough brains to keep it shut can earn you. A one-way ticket to the work camps that no one even knows exists.

Nuclear war has ravished the nation, and a century later, the survivors are living in an entirely new world. In a society where everything is decided for you, from where you work to who you marry, dissidence is not taken lightly.

But, even inside the camps, Kaleigh’s fiery spirit refuses to be extinguished. In a single moment of defiance, she manages to spark a riot that ignites into a full-blown rebellion.

With growing numbers counting on her, not just for their freedom, but for their very lives, two different boys vying for her heart, and trouble brewing from within the camp itself, can Kaleigh find a way to step up and become the leader everyone is counting on her to be, or will even the most carefully laid plans come crashing down around her?

REVIEW

I’m a huge fan of dystopian fantasy, so of course I was eager to get into this book. A beautiful cover and an intriguing premise – I was instantly hooked.

The book started out really well and I was quickly drawn into Katniss Kaleigh and Peeta’s Peter’s world. I liked her feisty character and some of the supporting characters too even though it had a distinctly The Hunger Games feel to it. But what really drew me deeper into the story was the author’s snarky writing that had me grinning.

Then I reached a point in the book where Katniss Kaleigh had to go for her first branding and - *insert screeching brakes here* - I think to myself, what the heck? She received a branding on the back of her neck only a few chapters earlier and now the author’s pretending like this is her first? Wouldn’t this then be her second branding? I was thoroughly confused. So I backtracked and reread the chapter in which she received her first prisoner branding – and there it is. A huge, gaping hole in the plot. I was utterly disappointed as this was not the only discrepancy. Katniss Kaleigh refuses to get into a car because she’s never been in one before and she’s afraid she might not be able to deal with the speed the car is traveling at, but a few minutes later she gets into a train that moves at lightning fast speed, looks out the window at the landscape rushing by, and this doesn’t bother her at all. Strange.

You see, tiny details are important to me as reader. I appreciate it when an author isn’t dumping info all over the place, but leave a lot to the reader’s imagination. However, it just made no sense to me that it is never mentioned that prisoners ever got the opportunity to shower or wash themselves or use the bathroom. The prisoners’ daily routine consisted of waking up, having breakfast, going down to the mines to slave away, coming back up for dinner and then going straight to bed. It was blatantly clear that the everyday-routine task of cleaning themselves or getting dressed in a clean set of clothes was overlooked in the writing of the prisoners’ daily rituals, and I was left under the impression that Katniss Kaleigh and her friends never had a shower, brushed their teeth, combed their hair, or put on clean underwear in three months. Gross. The first mention of a bathroom (at the prisoner camps) only occurs nearly halfway into the book and that was when a wound needed to be cleaned. Now this might seem as petty things to complain about, but I was having such a great time reading this book, especially enjoying the author’s way of thinking, that I couldn’t help feeling disappointed that such obvious things were being overlooked by the author and/or editor. Even in The Hunger Games and Catching Fire, the characters' daily cleaning rituals were mentioned.

Aside from my disappointment in important details being disregarded, I think this is a terrific book. The story isn’t really unique as far as dystopian novels go, but it is an immensely enjoyable one, if you overlook the abovementioned points. The similarities with elements from The Hunger Games were observable (from unintentionally inciting a rebellion and overthrowing the system, the ever popular-in-YA-novels love-triangle, to using a train as the main form of transport), but the author has her own distinct writing style which bears no resemblance to that of Suzanne Collins. I loved the ending and it got me curious as to what will be happening in the next book. I would love to give it five stars for great writing, suspense, and the fact that I simply couldn’t put it down until I got to the exhilarating cliffhanger ending, but I feel let down by the gaping holes in the story and therefore only give it a worth-your-time-reading three stars.

REVIEW: "THE FALLEN STAR" - by Jessica Sorensen

THE FALLEN STAR
(Fallen Star, Book 1)
by Jessica Sorensen

REVIEWED BY: Ellen Fritz

OVERVIEW

For eighteen year-old Gemma, life has never been normal. Up until recently, she has been incapable of feeling emotion. And when she's around Alex, the gorgeous new guy at school, she can feel electricity that makes her skin buzz. Not to mention the monsters that haunt her nightmares have crossed over into real-life. But with Alex seeming to hate her and secrets popping up everywhere, Gemma's life is turning into a chaotic mess. Things that shouldn't be real suddenly seem to exist. And as her world falls apart, figuring out the secrets of her past becomes a matter of life and death.

REVIEW

I truly and thoroughly enjoyed reading “The Fallen Star”!  Gemma, the main character, is still learning to deal with her newly awakened emotions, when Alex and his sister, Aislin, arrive at school.  With their arrival, Gemma's life changes as she discovers that magic, witches, vampires and the monsters from her nightmares are real.  As though that is not enough, she also starts having visions and becomes aware of some painful, scary secrets concerning her background.  In the end she does not know who to believe or trust and betrayal becomes a nasty reality.

This book hooked me from the very first paragraph.  Non-stop action, nail-biting suspense and monsters that can freeze their victim to death, kept me turning the pages.  The well-crafted characters are realistic and their interaction can be highly amusing as well as touching.  Gemma's inner dialogue had me smiling most of the time and her smart mouth made me laugh out loud.

The light romance between Gemma and Alex is tastefully worked into the story.  Amidst the action and monster dodging there is also a fair amount of sadness that definitely brought tears to my eyes.

“The Fallen Star” is, however, not just all action and monster fighting but also about coming to terms with betrayal and the testing of loyalties.  I highly recommend this book to readers of all ages and, as it ends with a magnificent cliff hanger, I, for one, can't wait to get hold of the next book in this series.  Five Stars and a thumbs up for “The Fallen Star” and an excellent author!

BOOK BLAST & $50 GIVEAWAY: "FAITH" - by Heather Bixler

Faith - 4 Week Mini Bible Study

In this four week mini Bible Study you will examine your faith and what it means to have faith in God. He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you." Matthew 17:20 Our faith begins with what we know and believe about God. Our faith will carry us how far we are willing to let it take us. Faith is a choice and we need to begin by choosing to believe in Jesus and His power to move mountains, heal the sick, and save us from all our sins through His sacrifice on the cross. When we believe in God we then learn to walk in faith and trust God. But first we must believe, and it's up to us, we can either choose to believe in Him or not. But faith will mean nothing until we believe with all our heart that God is who He says He is.

Praise for Faith

Don't have time to read a long book on faith? This study will give you simple tools to understand faith and help you to develop a closer relationship with God. ~Lorilyn Roberts

This is a great book that allows you to start looking deeper into faith. I love the fact that there is a lot of scripture reference so one can look into the Bible and further study the word. ~Shraon

This study was a wonderful lift to my faith. I encourage others to take this short journey to an increased faith. ~Shirley Strait

REVIEW: "UNDEADLY" (The Reaper Diaries, Book 1) - by Michele Vail

UNDEADLY
(The Reaper Diaries, Book 1)
by Michele Vail

PUBLISHER: Harlequin TEEN

PUBLICATION DATE: November 27, 2012

REVIEWED BY: Books4Tomorrow

OVERVIEW

The day I turned 16, my boyfriend-to-be died. I brought him back to life. Then things got a little weird...

Molly Bartolucci wants to blend in, date hottie Rick and keep her zombie-raising abilities on the down-low. Then the god Anubis chooses her to become a reaper—and she accidentally undoes the work of another reaper, Rath. Within days, she's shipped off to the Nekyia Academy, an elite boarding school that trains the best necromancers in the world. And her personal reaping tutor? Rath.

Life at Nekyia has its plusses. Molly has her own personal ghoul, for one. Rick follows her there out of the blue, for another...except, there's something a little off about him. When students at the academy start to die and Rath disappears, Molly starts to wonder if anything is as it seems. Only one thing is certain—-Molly's got an undeadly knack for finding trouble....

REVIEW

Who knew reading about Egyptian mythology, reapers, necromancy, ghosts, and zombies could be so much fun! Well, heck, if you haven’t read debut author Michele Vail’s butt-kicking new series, The Reaper Diaries, yet, you wouldn’t know, now would you? Not to be confused with The Vampire Diaries. No, no, no, this is a new kind of awesomeness all on its own. But let me assure you, this is the first book in a splendid new series you don’t want to miss out on. It’s way better than its blurb promises it to be. Imagine having a ghoul as a butler, who obeys your every command (and he can braid your hair like a pro). Got you curious? You haven’t seen anything yet.

I know I’ve said this a million times before, but for those new to my reviews, one of my pet peeves in books are weak, whiny female characters. Luckily, this is not the case and Molly’s character is really great. She’s strong, smart, fun, has a snarky sense of humor, and tackles her fears head-on. It was easy to step into her shoes, as well as those of all the supporting characters – most of them likeable, and a few not so much, and immerse myself in Molly’s utterly fascinating world, which – I might add – changes drastically after the events at her sixteenth birthday party. For those of you who, like me, are attracted to books with bad-boy characters, “Undeadly” has a seriously yummy one who goes by the name of Rath. The chemistry between him and Molly is tangible, and their contemptuous bantering elicited a good chuckle from me every so often.

Two more things I really loved about this book is that, one, there’s no love-triangle (thank goodness!), and two, there are so many twists, secrets and revelations it will make your head spin - but in a good way. It certainly kept me turning the pages in a frenzy to find out what happens next. After the second chapter I simply gave in and lost myself in this wonderful book, and before I knew it, I finished it in the space of a couple of hours. Just so you know, this one has a cliff-hanger ending, but fortunately book two is on its way,

“The Reaper Diaries” is definitely a series with attitude that is sure to generate a huge following.  It will not surprise me if this is made into a hit tv series. It has so much promise and potential, and the author’s writing style is fresh and unique. I highly recommend this book as a must-read - as in place this right at the top of your to-be-read list, without delay.  “Undeadly” deserves far more than a mere five stars. Yep, it is that good, and makes my list of most unforgettable books read in 2012!

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.

EXCERPT

She paused and looked at me. “Is something wrong?”
Not wrong per se. There was a line of ghosts behind Autumn. Six or seven, maybe more, because a few were flickering and it was difficult to actually count. I’d seen ghosts before, because SEERs were popular and lots of places had them—restaurants, clothing stores, ice cream shops. But it kinda creeped me out to see ghosts all loose and floating around, mostly because I shouldn’t be able to see earthbound spirits that weren’t attached to SEERs. This was a totally different heka power, one I’d never had.
“You have…er, company,” I said.
“Oh, them.” She sighed. “I’m ren heka. The thing is, most of the spirits I meet want to stick around. It’s not like I’m a reaper and can escort their poor souls to the afterlife. And they won’t listen to me about moving on.” She smiled. “It’s like having cats, really. So, you’re a ren heka, too?”
“No. Ka heka,” I said.
“And you see the spirits? Ahmazing.” She did look amazed, but not suspicious. I mean, not in a why-she-must-be-a-superreaper-weirdo kind of way. She waved to the spirits behind her. “I’d introduce you, but it’d take too long. Also, I can’t keep ‘em all straight.”
“Are there any SEERs at the Academy?” I asked.
Autumn made a face. “No. Zombies and ghouls are one thing, but trapping a poor spirit to do your laundry? It’s against Nekyia’s policy to have any SEERs on campus.” She offered me a wide smile. “How about I show you where Ms. Chiles’s office is?”
“That’d be awesome. Thanks!”
She turned and walked across the bridge, her cadre of ghost buddies trailing after her. I didn’t fail to notice that most of them were of the teen boy variety. I think Autumn had a bunch of admirers who were not pets at all.

After all, she doesn’t have many friends and David has always been nice to her. it doesn’t hurt that he’s supercute and irresistible, too. All she has to do is hack into the government’s main computer system. but a few hours later, her whole life changes. she is caught and taken in for questioning, only this isn’t your run-of-the-mill arrest. rather than serve a juvenile detention sentence, she accepts the option to change her name and enlist in a secret government spy agency that trains teen agents to go undercover. As if that wasn’t overwhelming enough, she discovers that David works for this agency as well! And before she even begins to understand what is going on, she’s sent on her first mission as an undercover model. And who better to partner with than David himself!

REVIEW

One chapter into this book and I was so hooked, I couldn’t put it down until I’ve devoured it all in one afternoon! This book was everything I was hoping it would be, and so much more.  “Model Spy” is one of those rare gems you read while smiling all the time. It’s fun, filled with adventure and excitement, and the non-stop butt-kicking action and suspense had my adrenaline pumping. I can only best describe it as X-Men (with brainpowers instead of super powers) meets Miss Congeniality.

I really liked all the different characters in this story. They were interesting, realistically flawed, and three dimensional. It was inspiring to see how GiGi, the main character, grew as a person and how she gained self-confidence. The budding romance between her and David was a slow climb and it was refreshing to meet characters who didn’t fall into each other’s arms in the second chapter of the book. Instead, the reader is kept guessing throughout the story whether these two will end up together or not.

The fast-paced plot is fraught with humor and more than enough tension to keep you turning the pages at a steady pace. Attention is given to detail and the author deftly draws the reader into the world of The Specialists by meticulously describing the setting and surroundings utilizing all five senses.

Although this is a read aimed specifically at the YA audience, it will undoubtedly be enjoyed by older readers as well. “Model Spy” is excellently written and I effortlessly indulged myself in this fantastic book. I was delighted to find there are more books available in this series that chronicles the adventures of GiGi and her new friends. I am thrilled to give this terrific book a well-deserved five stars!

REVIEW: "THE SEVEN MARKETS" - by David Hoffman

THE SEVEN MARKETS
by David Hoffman

PUBLISHER: Smith Publicity

PUBLICATION DATE: November 23, 2012

REVIEWED BY: Books4Tomorrow

OVERVIEW

Once in every century, for three days only, the Market comes.

Her whole life, Ellie MacReady has delighted at her papa’s stories of the fantastical Market. The creatures that walk its streets. The wonders waiting in every shopkeeper’s window. The exotic foods and unearthly scents which tempt travelers on every corner.

But in all his stories, her papa never mentioned the irresistible Prince, or the perils which await young girls who wander away to explore the Market on their own.

REVIEW

I can honestly say I’ve never read anything like this before. The title and premise of the book tickled my curiosity and led me to believe that I’ll be taken on a fantastical journey through vibrant, mysterious markets like none other. In that sense, “The Seven Markets” lived up to its promise. Also, I really liked the cover, which only added more to my curiosity. The reader, along with Ellie, visits seven markets with the first starting in the eighteenth century and the last ending in the distant future. Each market is different than the one before and I applaud the author for creating truly imaginative worlds for the reader to explore.

The reasoning behind my three-star rating though, is that I simply didn’t get the point of this book. The plot is imaginative, unique and complex, but hard to follow. It started out really well with a story full of promise, but near the end of the first market, I was completely lost and couldn’t manage to catch up again. Each market is set in a different century and the further along I read, the more confused I was. Nothing made sense to me and I only finished this book out of sheer curiosity, hoping for a conclusion which would explain everything to me. Sadly, this never happened.

Now, I’m not saying you shouldn’t pick up this book. No, I’m saying that for me, this just wasn’t my cup of tea. I really liked Ellie’s character at the start of the book, but I felt that when the journey to the markets started, Ellie and the rest of the characters became rather dull. What kept my interest was the feel and ambience of the different markets – which the author managed to describe rather well, enough mysteries and surprises to keep me guessing all the way, and of course the fact that I thought somehow it would all come together at its finale. The writing was done very well, but most of the time the transitioning from one scene to the next was abrupt and left me feeling whiplashed.

Usually I wouldn’t read anything by an author whose first book I read disappoints me, but in this case I’ll make an exception, because although this story made no sense to me whatsoever, I still enjoyed the author’s creativity. And like I said before, the writing was really well-done. It showed me that this writer has potential and the ability to come up with fresh new ideas to intrigue and enthral the reader.  Overall the story concept was interesting and out of the ordinary, and I’m happy I had the opportunity to have read this book.

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.
