QUICK REVIEW: "The Ladies Temperance Club's Farewell Tour" - by Jeff Lee

THE LADIES TEMPERANCE CLUB’S FAREWELL TOUR
by Jeff Lee

REVIEWED BY: Books4Tomorrow

OVERVIEW

Vonda Mae Ables could never hurt a soul. Now she’s on the lam in a huge RV, with her best friends, gallons of Chardonnay and a stiff in the freezer.

Vonda has suffered her alcoholic boyfriend's abuse for twenty years. But when she finally stands up for herself, she overdoes it and crushes his skull with a football trophy. Rather than turn herself in, she enlists her friends to help ditch the body. They stash the boyfriend in the freezer of his humongous RV and take off for Arizona, planning a quiet desert burial. Unfortunately, the plan goes more sideways with every mile. Vonda finally finds a likely place to plant the dead SOB, but now he's frozen solid and stuck in the freezer.

Exhausted from their day of digging and unsuccessfully trying to extricate him, the women stop at a local cafe. While they're drinking dinner, a gang of Harley-riding repo guys makes off with the RV and a Good Samaritan reports the theft. When the police arrive to investigate Vonda panics, knowing if the cops recover the RV and discover what's in the freezer, she might have to turn that old trophy on herself.

Imagine THELMA AND LOUISE meets Lucy & Ethel -- It's about good friends, good wine, manslaughter and the lengths we’ll go for those we care about.

REVIEW

Bursts of laughter punctuated the quiet of our household as I devoured chapter after chapter of this hilarious book into the wee hours of the morning. It takes a lot to get a really good laugh out of me, but author Jeff Lee did it with ease!

Meet Jack Thibideau, the boyfriend who meets his demise early on in the book. Jack hates large women, mousy women, cops, game show hosts, most teachers, actors, professionals, guys who make more than him, guys who make less than him, and a whole bunch of other things. Now let me introduce you to the Ladies Temperance Club members. There’s Vonda, Jack’s girlfriend, who considers herself a leader in fashion - though her friends might not completely agree with this; Kay, Vonda’s closest friend for more years than she cares to remember; and Francine – a large, honest woman who lives life to the fullest and don’t give a crap about what anybody thinks. They love their wine, they love each other, but they’re not too fond of Jack.

Ingeniously written, with plenty of wit, side-splitting humor and double entendres, the journey these three extraordinary women undertake, isn’t only about burying a body in the desert, but also explores how far the best of friends will go for each other. Trust me, when you’re in a bit of a pickle, like oh….bludgeoning your abusive, cheating scum of a man to death, these are the ladies you’ll want on your side. And they’re a riot to boot!

If the blurb didn’t get you rushing out to your nearest bookstore or over to Amazon to get your hands on this gem of a book, then most likely nothing will. But here’s an excerpt which I hope would convince you:

Of course she felt bad about what happened; few people on the planet actually deserved to be done in by another, and there were miles of difference between Jack’s simple, larcenous no-goodnikness and, say, Hitler, Saddam Hussein or your everyday, run-of-the-mill corporate raider.

But looking at it in the light of a new morning, Vonda managed to convince herself that physically removing Jack Thibideau from the census rolls was really an act of self-defense.

Because after living with that bitter, abusive, impotent, alcoholic and thieving bastard for twenty years, it was really a case of kill or be killed. If Vonda hadn’t exercised a little extreme prejudice on Jack, she would have had to do herself in, to finally be free of his special brand of long-term charm, goodness and warmth.

And like those old Highway Safety public service commercials used to say, “The life you save may be your own.”

Admittedly, the title of the book didn’t grab me and if I hadn’t read the blurb, I probably would’ve given it a miss. But by the end of the book, it felt as though I’ve been on one heck of an adventure with some of the most stunningly real characters – no wait, make those ‘friends’ - I’ve ever only come across in few other books. We’re talking supreme entertainment here.

“The Ladies Temperance Club’s Farewell Tour” exceeded my highest expectations and therefore I enthusiastically recommend it with a richly-deserved 5 stars!

QUICK REVIEW: "Blue Bells of Scotland" (Blue Bells trilogy #1) - by Laura Vosika

BLUE BELLS OF SCOTLAND
Blue Bells Trilogy
Book One
by Laura Vosika

REVIEWED BY: Books4Tomorrow

OVERVIEW

Shawn Kleiner has it all: money, fame, a skyrocketing career as an international musical phenomenon, his beautiful girlfriend Amy, and all the women he wants-- until the night Amy has enough and leaves him stranded in a Scottish castle tower.
He wakes up to find himself mistaken for Niall Campbell, medieval Highland warrior. Soon after, he is sent shimmying down a wind-torn castle wall into a dangerous cross country trek with Niall's tempting, but knife-wielding fiancee. They are pursued by English soldiers and a Scottish traitor who want Niall dead.

Thrown forward in time, Niall learns history’s horrifying account of his own death, and of the Scots’ slaughter at Bannockburn. Undaunted, he navigates the roiled waters of Shawn’s life-- pregnant girlfriend, amorous fans, enemies, and gambling debts--- seeking a way to leap back across time to save his people, especially his beloved Allene. His growing fondness for Shawn’s life brings him face to face with his own weakness.

REVIEW

I was hesitant to read this book as I don’t entertain the notion of time-travelling. But Laura Vosika made it so believable, I caught myself from time to time actually reconsidering such a concept.

On the very first page of this book, I was already bent over laughing so hard. The author brilliantly portrays the arrogance and selfishness of the main character in a delightfully humorous way. You know guys like him. He swaggers into a room, women’s knees buckle and men’s blood boils. The world seems to hold its breath for a minute just for him. That’s Shawn Kleine, one of the two main characters at the start of this book.

Shawn is the epitome of self-indulgence, self-importance and self-centeredness. To him, life is all about him. A master trombone player, he can turn a tin whistle into stardom!  On the flipside of the coin and almost 700 years in the past, there is Niall Campbell, a mirror image of Shawn in the looks department. A proud Scottish warrior on the verge of fighting a war to save Scotland, his betrothed, and the lives of everyone dear to him, he is the exact opposite of Shawn Kleine in that he is noble, humble and a man of faith. The only other similarity between these two men is their stubbornness. Oh, and of course the little issue of them switching places in time.

The lyrical wordplay in this book is amazing! I couldn’t help but savor every word; every sentence, every page, as it invoked vivid pictures in my mind of Scotland in the fourteenth century and present day. The atmosphere of each scene, whether in a present-day concert hall or fourteenth century wilderness or battlefield, is so well described that not only can you visualize the surroundings, you can feel it, you can hear it and you can smell it…..heck, you can almost touch it! The author’s love for, and sound knowledge of music and musical instruments is also evident as the story is filled with traditional and folk music to accompany and accentuate the different moods and emotions of the characters.

A good balance was maintained between the contrasts and similarities of Shawn and Niall. These were some of the most genuine and real characters, with elegantly written depth and dimension, I’ve come across in a long time. Shawn’s naïve arrogance in stark contrast to Niall’s unassuming nature added a lighthearted ambience to this book, yet at the same time seriousness was lent to the story with a subtle religious undertone. Niall’s struggles with his unwavering faith when he questions why he was placed in a situation over which he has no control, and Shawn’s character’s growth as understanding of his past dawns on him through life-threatening events and while fighting his own personal demons, is a personal journey which compels the reader to do some soul-searching of one’s own.

The unusual plot told from Shawn and Niall’s different points of view, and an open ending which would leave you eager to get the next book in this trilogy makes “Blue Bells of Scotland” unadulterated magical indulgence. I guess I have to stop gushing about this magnificent book at some point, so I’ll just give it to you straight - this really is a one-of-a-kind book deserving of much more than merely 5 stars!

QUICK REVIEW: "Awaken" (The Patronus: Book 1) - by Sarah M. Ross

AWAKEN”
(The Patronus #1)
by Sarah M. Ross

REVIEWED BY: Books4Tomorrow

OVERVIEW

Lucy Donovan was supposed to have a weekend of fun in the sun, celebrating her upcoming graduation from college. In a split second, everything changed. A drunk driver ended Lucy’s mortal life.

Lucy opens her eyes to a world she never imagined possible and a new destiny: as a Patronus, a guardian of spirits. Adjusting to her new role and abilities while negotiating this confusing realm will test her limits and push her further than she ever dreamed she would go. From wayward spirits who don’t want her help to soul stealing vampires, and even a stuck-up British royal, Lucy must brave them all to save one spirit she can’t bear to lose.

Further complicating her life is an inexplicable yet growing connection she feels to a member of her team, Max, whose mysterious behavior leaves her both confused and intrigued.

Waking up dead was just the beginning of her problems. Lucy’s death is about to become the greatest adventure of her life.

REVIEW

“Awaken” took me by surprise. Besides the stunning book cover, I also liked the concept of chosen ones becoming guardians in the afterlife to protect other spirits awaiting judgment before moving on, from being stolen by supernatural forces who wants to ensure the survival of their species. It is yet again another refreshing look at vampires, werewolves, faeries and such; although - except for the vampires – werewolves and faeries are not the main focus of this book. As I’ve had my fill of vampire and werewolf themed books, I enjoyed this one more for its take on guardians and guides in the afterlife.

Who knew that in heaven you’ll find a waiting room with magazines dated from the 1980s, a coffee station and water cooler? Even more astonishing is finding that the realm of the after-life is not much different from the world we know. Chinese takeout, all your favorite television channels, buffet breakfasts and a fully equipped spa are only some of the familiar things you’ll come across in this realm. And as wonderful as all that sounds, I was slightly disappointed that the author didn’t put a little more imagination into this. Instead, she just duplicated our world. Having a realm where anything is possible at her fingertips, I’m surprised she chose not to be more creative and wow the reader with a whole new magical world! But……that’s just me. Hopefully, the next book in the series, “Avenge”, will do all that!

I liked all the characters, and again I was so happy to find another female lead who isn’t a, whiny, spoiled little drama-queen, which you so frequently find in YA novels. Considering the new life Lucy had to embrace, and also surviving a horrendous attack soon after she arrived in her new world, she takes her duties as a Patronus (guardian) seriously. Her dogged determination and fearlessness to protect innocent souls from the evil trying to snatch them away, is remarkable to say the least. And what I wouldn’t give to have one of those cool bracelets the guardians get to wear, with which you can……no, wait, let me not spoil it for you. But trust me, you’ll also want one!

A delightful little twist to this tale is how the author worked well-known historical figures into the story. A lot of time is spent detailing the training sessions Lucy had to partake in to help her develop the skills necessary for the battles ahead of her. After said training sessions, I was as exhausted as she was since the author described it so well! She really got my adrenaline pumping and I felt ready for the fight along with Lucy. I felt giddy knowing we’re ready to go and kick some vampire butt!

This quick, well-written read will definitely appeal to the young adult market of readers aged 16 and up. “Awaken” is the first book in a new series that will definitely knock your socks off!

GUEST POST & GIVEAWAY: "Shadow Path" - by P.L. Blair

SHADOW PATH
by P.L. Blair

OVERVIEW

An Ogre murdered with a rune-inscribed sword is just the beginning as Kat Morales, a very human police detective in Corpus Christi, Texas, and her Elf partner Tevis MacLeod follow a blood trail that leads to Pixies, necromancy and Magic of the Blackest kind … to its climax in a stronghold Between worlds, where Tevis must duel spell for spell with a former lover who wants to see her old flame extinguished permanently.

Shadow Path placed third in the Paranormal Romance Guild Reviewer’s Choice Awards (YA Category) in January 2012.

EXCERPT ofSHADOW PATHby P.L. Blair

One step over the threshold, and Tevis stopped so fast Kat nearly ran into him. “I … see what you mean. Arvandus,” he scowled over his shoulder at the Wizard, “is this wise?”
“I have cast a spell — several in fact. We are the only ones who can see it.”
Kat pushed past her partner. And stopped, gawking. An open carriage hovered in the air inches from the balcony railing. A silver-white horse, large but well-proportioned, hovered between the traces. At the reins sat an individual who appeared to be Mideastern, bearded and clad in shirt, trousers — even a turban and pointed-toed slippers — straight out of the Arabian Nights.
“… we and any other creatures from the Realms,” Tevis was saying. “Coira will hear of this.”
“I certainly hope so! I'm not expending energy on these spells just for the fun of it, you know.” Arvandus drew a breath, released it. “I suspect she knows already that a Wizard has taken an interest in her affairs — or, at the very least, is considering that possibility. But I want her to be certain, without any doubt, that not merely a Wizard, but a Wizard of the First Rank, has taken interest in her doings, and that you and Kathryn have an ally.”
He inclined his head in a slight bow to Kat, who had managed, finally, to tear her gaze from the fantastic coach and its driver.
“I do not believe Wizards impress her that greatly, Arvandus. She has killed one of you already. She will not stop at killing another.”

GUEST POST

The Shadow Path
Author's note: One of the principal characters in my fantasy/detective novel, Shadow Path, has volunteered to fill in for me on this blog:

It starts with the dead ogre. Killed with a sword inscribed with seven runes that, according to my partner, are deadly. My partner – Tevis – is an elf. He knows these things.

I'm Kat Morales, and we're both detectives with the Corpus Christi, Texas, police department. I didn't even know elves actually existed until four years ago, when Portals opened Between our world – the world of humans – and the world that Tevis calls the Realms of Magic. Quite a shock for a lot of people when that happened.

But that's another story. Tevis and I have been called in to investigate the ogre's murder, and it led us to the shop of a banshee, Maeve … and partnership with a wizard – Arvandus – an old friend of Tevis', it turns out … and a confrontation with a pixie …

Forget Tinkerbell. The only thing real pixies have in common with Tinkerbell are the small size, and don't let that fool you. Real pixies are blood-thirsty little flesh-eaters.

But the one that tried to kill me was just a flunky for Coira, another elf – a nasty specimen whose real intent was to kill Tevis. They'd been lovers once – I don't even care to think about how long ago that was in human years – but Tevis left her when she turned to black magic. Death magic. What Tevis calls the “shadow path.”

So now Coira wants Tevis dead. And to get his attention, she's trailing a string of corpses behind her, a trail that leads to her stronghold between worlds. Tevis and I have to go after her. And Tevis has to call on magic – wizardry that he gave up thousands of years ago. He has to fight Coira in a duel of spells. And if he loses …

He dies.

Renee must search for the power within herself to save the lives of those she loves and trust the magic that flows through her blood.

Blood Magic takes you on a mystical ride into alternate dimensions and the world of the Draven witches with the supernatural creatures that have sworn to protect them and die for them.

REVIEW

I was enchanted by the cover of this book and couldn’t wait to start reading it. I can’t say that I haven’t read similar plot lines before, but I did find this one quite enjoyable and incredibly entertaining. This was an action-packed, exhilarating read with loads of surprising twists.
I especially liked the fast pace at which the story moved and nowhere did I get the feeling that the plot was being dragged out. All the characters were very well developed and focus was placed on the strong bonds between Renee and her parents I believe helped shape the person she became by the end of the book and which also gave her the strength and confidence to conquer the dangers she was forced to face.

What I enjoyed most about “Blood Magic” is that the main character is a powerful female lead who doesn’t need men to fight her battles for her. With her magic and fighting skills she is a force to be reckoned with, yet she also has a vulnerable side to her that invokes empathy from the reader. Her courage, tenacity and strong morals make her a character to be admired. But at the same time, I also felt that she needed to lighten up, get a sense of humor and stop behaving like a brat.

Tons of good and evil supernatural entities are introduced throughout the book, and the suspense keeps building to breaking point as Renee faces off against one malevolent character after another. A good balance was brought to these characters with the Mystics, whom I simultaneously liked and disliked. My absolute favorite character of course was Tristan. I just adored his sense of humor and sarcasm!

“Blood Magic” is the first book in a fabulous new series which promises its readers hours of undiluted reading bliss. The superb writing, magnificent characters and heart-stopping action will have you battling to hold on to the edge of your seat as this book takes your imagination to new dimensions, and which makes it a definite 4 star must-read!

INTERVIEW with ROBIN WALDROP

Q: What inspired you to write “Ties to the Blood Moon”?

A: It started out as one of those crazy dreams. You know, the kind that you just can’t get out of your mind. Once I realized it wasn’t going to go away until I wrote about it, I knew I would have to create something far different than what was already out there…so I did.

Q: How did you come up with the title?

A: It just came to me one day. You know how you remember having a dream, but can’t remember about what? Well, that’s what happened to me. So, as I tried to remember what the dream was the title just popped into my head. I googled it just knowing it had been used several times, and to my surprise, I couldn’t find another book anywhere with the same title.

Q: Who designed the cover and how much input did you have regarding the design?

A: The awesome Claudia McKinney-phatpuppyart.com designed the cover. I simply told her what I had in mind and a little while later she emailed me the cover. As soon as I saw it I fell in love. She is a wonderful artist and extremely easy to work with. She is also designing the cover for book 2 of the series.

Q: Which of your characters in “Ties to the Blood Moon” are your favourite and why?

A: That’s an unfair question because I so love them all, but if I had to choose, I would say William. He’s mysterious with a touch of bad-boy thrown in ... lol!

Q: Is “Ties to the Blood Moon” your first book?

A: No, it’s actually my second. My first book is shelved right now. I hope to get it published in the next month or so.

Q: What was the hardest part of writing this book?

A: The beginning. Starting any book is hard for me. I probably wrote the opening twenty times before I found something I could live with.

Q: Did you learn anything from writing “Ties to the Blood Moon” and what was it?

A: I would have to say yes. I learned a lot about grammar and POV writing this second book.

Q: What makes “Ties to the Blood Moon” any different from other paranormal books with the same theme?

A: Some people have said, “It’s just like TWILIGHT.” When in fact it really isn’t other than the fact there is weres and vamps, and a love triangle. BUT, if you look at any love story you will find a love triangle.

Q: What are your current projects?

A: Of course book 2 of the series, but also I am working on some short stories I will be releasing in the near future. When I finish book 2 of the series I am going to take a short break from it and start my Zombie love story. Can you imagine ... a Zombie in love?

Q: Can you share a little of your current work with us?

A: In between writing book 2, I am working on outlining a prequel to book 1. A story about the chief’s family. That should be interesting.

Q: Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

A: Winners never quit, and quitters never win! You must always keep writing regardless of how bad it gets at times. It will pay off at some point. And also, never stop reading. A great writer always reads more than she writes.
