BOOK BLITZ: EXCERPT & GIVEAWAY: POSITIVELY MINE (Freshman Forty, #1) by Christine Duval

Title: Positively Mine
Series: Freshman Forty, #1
Author: Christine Duval
Publisher: Bloomsbury Spark
Publication Date: December 19, 2013
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult

SUMMARY

It is four weeks into her freshman year of college, and Laurel’s first test was unexpected. Discovering she’s pregnant isn’t exactly what she had planned for her first semester, and while she intends to tell her emotionally-distant father, being away at school makes it all too easy to hide.

An imperfect heroine plagued by bad choices and isolated during what should be the best time of her life, readers are sure to identify with Laurel as she confronts teen pregnancy, in secret.

EXCERPT

“The holidays can be stressful for everyone, but especially if you’re pregnant or just had a baby. As you leave here tonight and deal with potentially difficult people or situations over the holidays, I want you to focus on acceptance. In other words, don’t try to control the uncontrollable, and don’t try to change a person who can’t be changed. People are who they are. With acceptance comes forgiveness, and with forgiveness comes inner peace, and we can all use some of that.”

Her words strike a nerve, and I can’t help speaking up. “But what if the problem isn’t that you can’t accept them, but they can’t accept you?” I ask.

“In what way?”

“It’s like, with my father, I’m the symbol for everything that has gone bad in his life. So instead of us getting closer, he pushes me further away. And now he’s getting married, and he’s about to start a new life with someone, and I’m afraid I’ll never get the chance to show him that I’m a real person, that I exist.”

The entire group is looking at me, staring actually. Kyle is the first to speak up. “But you aren’t giving him a chance to accept you. You haven’t even told him you’re pregnant and you’re five months into it. You push him away as much as he does you.”

“That’s not true.”

Audrey chimes in. “It is, Laurel. You’re nice and all, but you’ve told, what? Two people you’re pregnant, other than us and a couple of doctors. You drive an hour to a support group when there is probably one right near Milton. How much longer are you going to keep this secret? If you told your dad, maybe he’d see that you’re a real person. Real people screw up.”

“Wow.” I wrap my arms across my chest. I feel invaded.

REVIEW: WHAT WOULD EMMA DO? by Eileen Cook

SUMMARY

Thou Shalt Not Kiss Thy Best Friend’s Boyfriend...again...

There is no greater sin than kissing your best friend’s boyfriend. So when Emma breaks that golden rule, she knows she’s messed up big-time...especially since she lives in the smallest town ever, where everyone knows everything about everyone else...and especially since she maybe kinda wants to do it again. Now her best friend isn’t speaking to her, her best guy friend is making things totally weird, and Emma is running full speed toward certain social disaster. This is so not the way senior year was supposed to go.

Time to pray for a minor miracle. Or maybe, just maybe, it’s time for Emma to stop trying to please everyone around her, and figure out what she wants for herself.

REVIEW

I’m probably going to say it more than once, but I loved absolutely everything about this book! If it comes down to it, I’ll even admit to wanting to spend a day inside Eileen Cook’s mind, because it seems that it could be a fun place to be for anyone who has ever read any of her books. Admittedly, apart from this book, I’ve only read one of her books so far, but I have another two waiting on my kindle to be read, and because I had such an awesome time reading this book – and finishing it in less than a day – I’m moving those two books up on my to-read list.

What Would Emma Do is exactly the sort of book I would like to read more of. It has the exact mix of all the elements that makes it that perfect read. First of all, it takes place in a little town called Wheaton. It’s not just any small town; it’s one of those small towns that locals describe as “the heartland of America”, and where religion is taken so seriously, it almost reaches cult-like proportions. Nothing much ever happens in Wheaton, but high morals and the church’s rule are the order of the day. Anything or anyone that is considered different, or falls outside of the belief system of the citizens of Wheaton, is rejected and revolted against with a burn-at-the-stakes passion. So imagine the widespread panic incited by the popular crowd when the unpopular kids at school are suspected of being terrorists because apparently they’re trying to poison students one popular girl at a time and...oh yeah, they’re “different”.

That was actually the second thing that attracted my interest in this story. The first would be Emma’s voice. Every chapter opens with Emma having a little monologue with God. Nothing offensive. Just a regular teen sharing her thoughts with the Lord. That right there instantly connected me with Emma, because I’ve had a few similar monologues with God, and I couldn’t help smiling as some of the things she said to Him were like an echo of my own words. Anyhow, I also really liked Emma because she made me laugh. I don’t mean smiling or giggling, I’m talking belly-clutching, tears-rolling-down-my-face laughs. Laughs that made others stare at me as I was trying to get control over my dignity, laughs. Yep, this author nailed it with the humor. Anyone who doesn’t laugh at least once while reading this book would, in my opinion, rank right up there next to sauerkraut. Especially with the locker incident. I read it like three times, and every time it made me laugh. OK, so you get my point about the humor, right?

Darci – the Reverend’s daughter – she’s the antagonist in this story. And trust me, she’s pretty scary. Nothing freaks me out more than a two-faced, scheming, lying, pastor’s daughter with the face of an angel who is the most popular girl in school and who is loved by ninety percent of the townsfolk. In their eyes she can do no wrong. That means, anyone who has the misfortune of landing on Darci’s wrong side, don’t stand a chance. Darci and her posse rule the school, rule the town, and have all the important decision-making adults wrapped around her pinkie. So where does that leave pariahs like Todd and Emma? Emma just wants to do the right thing, but she has so much to lose if she tells the truth. While she makes up her mind about whether she should do the right thing or let a few innocent students take the fall for Darci’s elaborate scheme, she suffers one embarrassment after the other, and have her own issues to deal with such as her relationship with her mom, falling in love with her best friend’s boyfriend and the school’s Jewish outcast. This girl has to make more than one tough decision and lots of times I was happy not to be in her shoes because I had no idea what I would’ve done faced with the same dilemmas.

There’s a tiny smidgen of romance in this book, and I especially love how the author dealt with it at the conclusion. The characters – main and secondary – are all three-dimensional and each of them has a unique voice. The small-town atmosphere, and specifically the entire Faith Forward scene at the end, was done terrifically! I felt the crowd’s anticipation and got caught up in their exuberance. The conclusion was just right, and if I had written this book I wouldn’t have done it any differently. What Would Emma Do subtly presses the reader to contemplate what decisions they would make if they were in Emma’s shoes and how it would affect their faith.

I’m fast becoming a fan of Eileen Cook’s writing and I can’t wait to read more of her books. The two I’ve read thus far has proved to have substance and were refreshing in its approach to the subject matter. I’d recommend What Would Emma Do to fans of Miranda Kenneally’s books. If you have a sense of humor, appreciate sarcasm and irony, and have an open-minded view towards God, I’m positive you’ll love this clean read as much as I have!

SUMMARY

Storm Rising

Syd! Liam's mental voice lurched against mine, his touch so strong I saw him standing in the dark basement of town hall, eyes wide, whole body shaking. The Sidhe. He let me feel his fear. Something is wrong.

—Decay. Crumbling death. Loss. Crushing me, pulling at my breath, my strength, the very earth beneath me weak and failing as Shaylee cried out in pain—

Syd has enough on her plate, being leader of her coven and becoming maji while trying to keep the world safe from evil sorcerers. Finding out she has to get married by her twenty-first birthday just adds to the pressure on her shoulders. That pressure doubles when the Sidhe contact her, their realm under attack by the Brotherhood. And the only way to save them is to find her own balance between the Light and the Shadow. A balance she needs her nemesis Ameline to achieve.

REVIEW

This action packed, never-a-dull-moment page turner had me in compulsive reading mode right up to the very last page. With the increasing malicious influence and attacks of the brotherhood, Syd is fighting fires and doing damage control on all fronts. From Sidhe world to demon plane; from magi city to enforcer fortress, Syd hits the floor running despite the threat of council justice should she break one more of their laws.

Although Syd and her mother are now almost enemies and, apparently, on different sides of the fight, Syd is growing more self-confident. In fact, she is so self-confident and her temper so volatile that I feared for her safety all the time. Fortunately she still has her family and closest friends to support, help and look out for her.

In The Undying the author imaginatively expands her already incredibly well crafted world of the supernatural. New planes of existence are explored and Syd discovers a few new means of magical travel. When Syd and her companions enter a plane, they often undergo a change in appearance to suit the mood of the specific world. I thought this to be an extremely original and imaginative touch.

Apart from all the excitement in Syd's life, there still remains the fact that she must, according to witch law, marry before she is 21 if she wants to remain a coven leader. Given her extremely complicated romantic life, it remains to be seen how she will manage to make this choice.

The Undying is filled with action and nail-biting suspense but it also contains some thoroughly sad, deeply touching and gentle romantic scenes. I highly recommend this book but urge readers to read the whole series to be able to read The Undying in context. A standing ovation and five stars to a wonderful book and brilliant author.

ABOUT the AUTHOR

My official bio reads like this: Patti Larsen is an award-winning middle grade and young adult author with a passion for the paranormal. But that sounds so freaking formal, doesn't it? I'm a storyteller who hears teenager's voices so loud I have to write them down. I love sports even though they don't love me. I've dabbled in everything from improv theater to film making and writing TV shows, singing in an all girl band to running my own hair salon.
But always, always, writing books calls me home.
I've had my sights set on world literary domination for a while now. Which means getting my books out there, to you, my darling readers. It's the coolest thing ever, this job of mine, being able to tell stories I love, only to see them all shiny and happy in your hands... thank you for reading.
As for the rest of it, I'm short (permanent), slightly round (changeable) and blonde (for ever and ever). I love to talk one on one about the deepest topics and can't seem to stop seeing the big picture. I happily live on Prince Edward Island, Canada, home to Anne of Green Gables and the most beautiful red beaches in the world, with my very patient husband and four massive cats.

SUMMARY

They’re from two different worlds.

He lives in the estate house, and she spends most of her time in the stables helping her father train horses. In fact, Savannah has always been much more comfortable around horses than boys. Especially boys like Jack Goodwin—cocky, popular and completely out of her league. She knows the rules: no mixing between the staff and the Goodwin family. But Jack has no such boundaries.

With her dream of becoming a horse jockey, Savannah isn’t exactly one to follow the rules either. She’s not going to let someone tell her a girl isn’t tough enough to race. Sure, it’s dangerous. Then again, so is dating Jack…

REVIEW

Racing Savannah is the fourth of Miranda Kenneally’s books I’ve read, and I enjoyed it as much as I did the previous three books in the Hundred Oaks series. I specifically enjoy this series because each book brings in new and/or familiar characters in a setting that is already well-known to the reader, but every time with a brand new story. I would even go as far as comparing it to watching a new season of a well-loved tv series.

I finished this delightful read in less than a day. Halfway through the first chapter I already felt right at home in Savannah’s world, and I was captivated by and totally in love with the Goodings’ farm and their horses. That’s right. I didn’t let anything get in my way of finishing this book the same day I started it. By now I’m so used to this author’s easy-reading style of writing I devoured this novel in mere hours. What stood out for me is how extensively the author did her research on professional horse racing and horse mannerisms. If I didn’t read in the afterword that all the interesting tidbits she shared about horses throughout the story came about because of her thorough research, I would’ve easily believed that she was sharing her personal experiences growing up around horses with the reader. I’m saying Savannah’s story had a very realistic feel to it. Not only because of the horses, but also because of Savannah’s impoverished background.

Savannah is an amazing character and one that could serve as inspiration to young women everywhere regardless of background. I loved almost everything about this girl. She’s down-to-earth, yet confident and sure of her choices. She makes mistakes but learn through it. She reaches out to others and puts her unborn sibling first; and though her family is dirt poor and she’s caught scrubbing floors by her love interest, she holds her head high and doesn’t back away from a challenge. But most importantly – and this is what made her an unforgettable character in my opinion – is that she understand her self-worth and never feels she needs to be validated to be appreciated. She shows respect to her dad and his pregnant girlfriend even though she doesn’t always agree with their choices and decisions. Also, she never hesitates to place her trust in people, although she’s been hurt before. There’s so much more I can say about Savannah as she’s a multilayered character, but then I’d go on forever. Apart from Savannah, there is actually an entire cast of characters worth mentioning. But to keep it short I’ll just say that each and every character contributed to the overall awesomeness of this book.

Now for the dreaded romance. OK, so I’m not fan, but, like a few of my other favorite authors, Kenneally knows how to write romance and keep it short and sweet. This is, after all, a love-story, but the author adds so many layers to it with family dynamics, new friendships, horse racing, and the main character learning through life’s little lessons how to make important decisions about her future, that you get so much more out of it than a mere straightforward tale of love and lust. I liked Jack’s character as well, but we don’t really get to peel away the layers on him. I loved how he had his three farm hounds milling around his feet in most of the scenes he meets up with Savannah. It added that rural lifestyle feeling to the story. That brings me to another point. I know nothing about life on a farm, much less one where they train race horses. I’m a born and bred city girl. But, and here I have to hand it to the author, she effectively managed to put me right there on the Goodwins’ farm, and she did it so well I swear I could smell the horse manure! Even at the horse races I could feel the wind blowing through my hair and the mud spattering on my legs when Savannah was racing Jack’s stubborn horse, Star.

One of the elements of this book that touched me deeply was the family dynamics. I’m a sucker for good family set-ups in books. Bottom line: I want to feel part of it. Family is very important to Savannah, and also to Jack. In their own way, they each try to keep their family happy with little sacrifice on their part. It’s the first time I come across a novel where both the protagonist and her love interest have this in common; them both being respectful and considerate towards their parents. Jack is used to having money and having people serve his every need, while Savannah is one of the people working for Jack and his family, cleaning their house and tending to their horses. Savannah knows what it’s like not to have any money, while Jack’s future is cemented. So then, what is the common denominator that brings these two together? One very cheeky and headstrong horse named, Star. But really, it’s not as simple as I make it sound. Keep in mind that Savannah and Jack’s families can’t allow them to be together as employer is not supposed to hobnob with employee (it sounds very Romeo and Juliet-ish, but without the drama and tragedy).

Racing Savannah is a wonderful read written by a very talented author. It has all the elements I loved from the previous books, but with new characters (and a few the reader might recognize from previous books), and an entirely new and refreshing plot. It’s not necessary to have read the previous books in the Hundred Oaks series to enjoy this one. Racing Savannah stands entirely on its own, but because I have read the first three books before reading this one, I felt I would’ve missed out on some of the secondary character relationships had I not read the other books first. Of course, it’s all up to you whether you want to start at book one or jump right in and see what this excellent book with its exceptional characters and storyline is all about. Whichever way, I highly recommend Miranda Kenneally’s books to young and old alike!

SUMMARY

“Don’t even think of leaving… I will find you,” he whispered. “Guaranteed.”

Sara and her mom have a plan to finally escape Sara’s abusive father. But when her mom doesn’t show up as expected, Sara’s terrified. Her father says that she’s on a business trip, but Sara knows he’s lying. Her mom is missing—and her dad had something to do with it.

With each day that passes, Sara’s more on edge. Her friends know that something’s wrong, but she won’t endanger anyone else with her secret. And with her dad growing increasingly violent, Sara must figure out what happened to her mom before it’s too late…for them both.

REVIEW

I really don’t have that much to say about this book, so I’ll keep my review short and give a quick overview of the things I liked and what I didn’t like.

What She Left Behind is one of those so-so reads. Overall, I enjoyed it and it has a really good story. It’s different in that it is sort of a thriller that keeps you guessing until almost at the end. There are clues that the possibility exists that Sara’s mom left without Sara, but there are also clues supporting the possibility that Sara’s dad murdered her mom. I mostly leaned towards the latter because those clues were the most. But whatever happened to Sara’s mom, I’m not gonna spoil it for you. You’ll have to find out what happened to her all on your own. Some would find the plot rather predictable, but I kinda enjoyed the cat-and-mouse twists the author had going. One thing is for sure: this is most definitely a suspenseful read. I mean, Sara’s dad is completely cuckoos and nerve-rackingly unpredictable. Can you say nut job? The suspense sure as heck kept me on the edge of my seat.

And that’s about it. That’s what kept me hooked. The characters are somewhat unremarkable, and the romance sort of spoiled it for me. At first I thought the romance was only there to fluff up the plot, but at the end I saw the purpose of it. Sara’s reactions sometimes gave me whiplash. One moment she’s head-over-heels in love, and the next she’s sick with worry about her mom. It’s like she had an on/off switch. You’ll find her thinking and worrying about her mom’s disappearance, and just like that she’s instantly all swoony about Alex. Even at the end of the book I felt all “bleh” about her. But at least Zack and Alex were quite interesting, and Sara’s volatile father had more personality than she did, so between those three they kept my mind from drifting while reading.

Anyhoo, I said I’ll keep my review to the point. This is really not a bad read, especially towards the end. The last half was definitely better than the first half. What She Left Behind is perfect for fans of Ten by Gretchen McNeil.
