Excerpt

The Kiss by the River:

The girl did not stir when Eanrin lifted her
into his arms; her sleep was profound indeed. Her head lolled over his arm, and
he was obliged to part her thick hair to uncover her face. It was an uncommonly
beautiful face for a mortal.
However, this girl’s beauty was
different from any he had ever before seen. For one thing, her skin was rich
dark brown, and her hair glossy black. For another, she was imperfect. Her
teeth, visible between gently parted lips, were a little crooked. Mud stained
her skin, making it darker still, and her brow, even in sleep, was puckered
with anxiety or fear. Her dreams must be wicked indeed.
Eanrin grimaced at the sight and
almost put her down again. After all, a princess with dreams like those
probably had a tale of woe to match. She would certainly wake with expectations
of a handsome hero to aid her. As far as Eanrin was concerned, a dash of
heroism was one thing, but commitment to a cause? Never. Rushing off to the
rescue of Lady Gleamdren was different, for he had determined that she must be
his wife and the sole inspiration to his life’s work. Besides, he loved her.
This creature meant nothing to him.
But blood oozed from the abrasions
on her wrists. And her body, mortal and vulnerable, lay in his arms. Eanrin
rolled his eyes heavenward as though to seek some holy aid. Then he braced
himself and wiped the mud off her lips with the edge of his cloak. She frowned
in her sleep and stirred, but did not wake.
“Nothing for it,” he muttered.
Closing his eyes and trying not to smell her any more than he must, he leaned
in and kissed her . . .

SUMMARY

Allison La Crosse, beginning a challenging family medicine residency, leaves the protection of her family. With the transfer, her worst nightmares come true. Her closely guarded mystical talents – those which seldom appeared before the move – unleash themselves from her confinement and reveal their presence with very little provocation.

Allison’s most terrifying power is her compulsion to cure the dying with her touch. Given her career, this gift would be valuable if she were not drawn like a magnet to the ailing person's every symptom. Some of which are fatal.

At the hospital and surrounded by life-and-death emergencies, Allison’s inability to manage her impulse turns deadly. When it does, her mentor, Brody, rescues her from her own demise. His resuscitation ignites an exciting and tempestuous bond between them.

Desperate for a cure, they join forces and embark upon a journey to uncover the origins of Allison’s lethal curse. In the midst of their adventure, Allison exposes a secret pursued by many…known by few.

REVIEW

Warriors of the Cross proved to be everything the very promising blurb said and much more! Allison LaCrosse has a gift of healing that can bring patients in critical condition back from the brink of death.  At the same time she is discovering that she might have other psychic abilities stemming from this healing power.  Where there is light and healing however, there will always be darkness and evil to counter it.

This book had my attention from the word go and kept me turning the pages up to the almost cliff-hanger ending.  Although there are moments of unbearable suspense, the story is comfortably paced and gives the reader ample time to get acquainted with all the key characters and their world.  The characters are well-described and uniquely crafted; the kind of characters a reader gets to like as though they were real people.  As the story contains very accurate detailed descriptions of medical procedures and hospital protocol, I was extremely impressed with the amount of research the author must have put into this book.

The romance in Warriors of the Cross is extensive but tastefully written.  The clichéd old love triangle, of which there are at least two in this book, is so uniquely and maturely handled that I actually thoroughly enjoyed it and found myself choosing sides.  Deeply spiritual and full of the love that emanates from most of the key characters, this story touched me profoundly.

For a read filled with excitement and a little suspense balanced by a gentle depth and a wry touch of humor, I highly recommend Warriors of the Cross and happily give it and the gifted author five stars.

SUMMARY

When Jasmine Marshall and her fellow hostages finally won back their freedom and escaped from the mysterious town of Kolob, they believed they would be rejoining civilization and resuming their normal lives. To their horror, what they found on the other side of the dense forest was far worse than anything they could have ever imagined.

On December 21, 2012, an unprecedented series of global attacks changed the world and shook the very foundations of society. A significant portion of the Earth’s population died following exposure to an illness that the media dubbed ‘The Maya Virus’, leaving the survivors to examine and question their humanity as vampires, demigods, and zombies crawled from the body bags of the aftermath. Valkyries, demons and other ancient creatures that had lain in wait for centuries began to emerge, seeking to claim the spoils and feed on what remains of mankind. Panicked governments are struggling to maintain order - some of them at any cost.

With her newfound empathic power driving her toward the tumultuous precipice of insanity, Jazz will now face the single greatest tribulations of her life. Will she choose to follow the man she loves despite his many unsettling secrets, or will she succumb to a treacherous phantom from her troubled past who could very well provide the ultimate key to her survival?

REVIEW

Some books stick with you, and others don’t. Some will leave you thinking about them months after you’ve read them, and some…well, there are some I really can’t wait to delete from my kindle when I’m done. The Refugees without a doubt falls into the category of books I’ll remember long after I’ve finished reading it. I’ve come to expect a certain pizzazz from this author which can only be found in her writing and the way she shapes her characters. As with The Citizens, the first book in this series, L.M. Smith again does not disappoint and outdid herself with this second instalment in the Jazz Nemesis series.

The first book ended with an incredible cliff-hanger which left me wanting to beg the author – even resort to bribing if I had to – to hurry up with the second book. Of course, sometimes it happens in a series that the second book leaves you feeling a little disappointed as it doesn’t always recapture the magic of the first book and that feeling of oh-gosh-I-hope-this-book-never-ends. Several chapters into the story I was relieved to find that this won’t be the case, even though the first few chapters had me slightly worried that the story might move in a less interesting direction and not regain the hold over me like it did with The Citizens. I absolutely loved the first book and it was constantly my book recommendation of choice.

Book two doesn’t exactly pick-up where the previous book had left off as I hoped it would, but instead takes the reader deeper into a richly illustrated, post-apocalyptic world buckling under the onslaught of the Maya Virus. So, what then can you expect from The Refugees? Well, definitely a few interesting new characters with powers of their own, and a heck of a lot more plot twists from the characters we already know and adore from the previous book. It was great to see how the author continued to develop Jazz and her posse, and then threw me for a loop when she brought in hottie Gabriel. Hmmmmm, a darn good-looking development to the storyline right there… Anyhoo, this of course creates what I consider the dreaded love-triangle (okay, that’s just me – love-triangles and I don’t mesh). Nonetheless, I’m curious to know who Jazz is going to end up with by the end of the series. I know who I’m rooting for, but I ain’t telling.

I’ve gotten used to the author’s style of writing in the first book – smooth, meticulous, easy to digest, and without overwhelming the reader with unnecessary details. She maintains this writing style in The Refugees and although it is a really long read with over five hundred pages, I never got the feeling that world- and character building descriptions were used as page-fillers to bore the reader into oblivion, as is sometimes the case in a number of dystopian novels.

This is a series, after all, so naturally another epic cliff-hanger ending has me plotting and scheming all over again on how I might convince the author to hurry up with the third book. The Refugees is a captivating, exhilarating read filled with mystery and endless surprising twists. If you haven’t read the first book yet, you might not understand what I’m so excited about. Trust me though, once it gets you hooked, it’s nearly impossible to put it down. Kudos to the author for once more keeping me glued to the pages of another terrific Jazz Nemesis treat.

WORLDS KEPT THEM APART.

DESTINY BROUGHT THEM TOGETHER.

Aria has lived her whole life in the protected dome of Reverie. Her entire world confined to its spaces, she's never thought to dream of what lies beyond its doors. So when her mother goes missing, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland long enough to find her are slim.

Then Aria meets an outsider named Perry. He's searching for someone too. He's also wild - a savage - but might be her best hope at staying alive.

If they can survive, they are each other's best hope for finding answers.

REVIEW

Rarely do I come across books with which I end up having a love-hate relationship. You know those ones which you want to love and dive into a gush-fest about, but however much you enjoyed it you just can’t overlook the things that bothered you about the story? For me, this is one of those books. I was really looking forward to reading this due to all the hype about it, and I’m definitely excited that it has been optioned for film by Warner Bros, but I don’t see myself reading it again.

It started off really well. My interest in the story was cemented the minute Aria was rescued by Perry, but what really intrigued me was the technology of the realms and the Smarteye. These only get explored and explained much later in the book, so by the end of Chapter two, I already had a dozen questions and thus threw myself into the story, reading until my vision blurred over. I needed answers and nothing was going to deter me from getting it. With all the possibilities the realms and Smarteye offered, it sounded like an incredibly exciting place to be, but when the author started explaining the workings of these, I felt she glossed over it too much and I ended up with more questions than I had before the explanations.

Aria and Peregrine… Well, I’m really in two minds about them. I loved Aria’s character and I loved Peregrine. Their characters were properly fleshed-out, they were interesting, and it was clear the author spent a lot of time establishing that connection between them and the reader. We are made privy to their background, their emotions, and their thoughts, which helped me to understand them and root for both of them. I especially liked Perry’s character at the start of the book when he viewed Aria as someone who is a means to an end. I loved that it wasn’t love at first sight and that their relationship developed gradually while I was getting to know each of them. But for me, they didn’t mesh well together as a couple. As lovely as the romance is between them, I just didn’t feel it. I felt Aria would be more suited for Roar, as they had a much more easygoing relationship with a natural feel to it with friendship as a foundation, than what she has with Perry. That’s my opinion.

Secondary characters who I hope to get to know better in the second book are Cinder, Roar, Talon and Liv. It took me some time to warm up to Cinder (he freaked me out the first few times I read about him), but once he started using his powers and scared the heck out of the cannibals, I liked him more. I hope in the following books his character will play a bigger role so I can find out what drove him away from his home. Roar I liked from the start, and the easy camaraderie between him and Perry was a joy to read. Not enough time was spent on Talon’s character for me to really invest in him, so when he was abducted it didn’t have much of an impact on me. He’s another character I’m hoping will get more of the spotlight in the next book or the one thereafter, so I can establish that connection with him as it seems he is an important character in the development of the story. Liv is a character who only gets mentioned in this book, but I already like her. This is one of the reasons why I’d want to read book two.

Halfway through there were a couple of chapters where I felt the story was starting to lose my interest, as it was dragging along, but then it picked up again nearing the last ten or so chapters. Regarding world building I think the author did a swell job, but at the same time I feel there were some elements she could’ve explained a little more to really give me a feel for the characters’ surroundings.  Overall, I really did enjoy this book. It’s something completely different from other dystopian novels and it set my imagination on fire. It is filled with suspense and a few shocking betrayals, as well as otherworldly elements. The author maintained a good balance between a primitive dystopian world and the futuristic technology of the pods, which should be enough to get any sci-fi fans interested. Even at times when there were a lull between certain chapters, focus continually remained on character development imperative to the balance of the story, so I couldn’t (and didn’t want to) skim over it.

This really is a fantastic book and the writing is superb. I’m happy I gave it a chance. I want to read the second book, but because of the points I mentioned here I’m a little hesitant. On the other hand though, I’m really curious to get answers to all the questions I still have, so time will have to tell whether I’ll read Through the Ever Night. My recommendation is for readers who love romance, fans of dystopian novels and sci-fi, and bookworms with heaps of patience with slow-paced plots to give this book a go. Although I’m not sure at this stage whether I’ll read the follow-up to this book, I’d love to read more by Veronica Rossi.

SUMMARY

The Enforcers Cometh

The moment my hand touched the handle, I felt Quaid enter the back yard, just like always. But if it wasn’t him on the other side of the kitchen door, who was? I pulled it open on reflex, still smiling, to find three black robed Enforcers looming in the darkness.

They didn’t wait for me to stand aside but muscled their way in. The leader, a woman with familiar features if not a face I knew personally, took a stand in the middle of the kitchen, body shimmering with blue power as the wards of the house tried to repel her.

“We’ve come for Miriam Hayle,” she said. “Your leader is under arrest.”

Syd’s life is finally settled. She’s even going on her first date with Quaid. That calm is shattered when a group of High Council Enforcers arrive and arrest her mother on countless charges. Desperate to defend Miriam, Syd calls on all of her family’s allies, even seeking out those she should probably leave in peace. Certain the Dumonts are behind the whole thing, Syd is shocked to discover there is much more to this attack on her coven, an attack led by an old enemy who holds Miriam’s life in her hands.

REVIEW

Wow, this just keeps getting better! Again Patti Larsen succeeded in writing an utterly unique and completely captivating story about mostly the same characters in the same setting.  At last Syd is getting ready for her very first date with Quaid, when, in walk the enforcers to arrest her mother, Miriam Hayle for crimes committed against the High Council.  Before the trial and during breaks in the trial, Syd has to collect evidence and witnesses to prove her mother's innocence.   Guided by grandmother Ethpeal Hayle, she gathers vampires, demons and even the dead to testify.  John Grisham's thrilling court room dramas look somewhat mundane  compared to this suspenseful supernatural court case.  To complicate things, Syd has to step up as coven leader as well as find her mysteriously vanished best friend.  Fortunately Sassafras, the silver Persian cat, has his paw and his opinion ready to support and assist.

Once again in this book I could see how skillfully the author allows her characters and their relationships with one another to grow and develop.  Syd, the main character, has to deal with the kind of problems teenagers all over the world face on a day to day basis.  Relationship changes, changes in the home, and the devastating reality of a troubled friend who is on the brink of self-destruction are just some of the things she has to cope with while trying to focus on getting her mother through the trial alive and with her powers intact.

The book zooms into edge-of-your-chair action from the very start and does not slow down until the end. As is usually the case with the Hayle Coven novels, I simply could not put the book down as the incredible suspense held me spellbound.  The title of the book, Full Circle, is also indicative of the fact that several old enemies reappear to, once again, take their shots at the Hayle Coven and its leader.

I definitely recommend this book as an absolute must-read but make sure to get the first seven books in the series before you read this one. Thumbs up and a loud cheer along with five well deserved stars for Full Circle and a wonderful author!
