REVIEW: "THE SHADOW SEER" (Ellenessia's Curse, Book 1) - by Fran Jacobs

THE SHADOW SEER
(Ellenessia’s Curse, Book 1)
by Fran Jacobs

REVIEWED BY: Ellen Fritz

OVERVIEW

For generations prophets have foreseen the birth of the Shadow Seer, the oracle of dark visions and fallen kingdoms. But by the time of Sorron, King of Carnia, their warnings have mostly been forgotten and his name is known only to a handful of scholars. When Sorron's grandson, Prince Candale, falls deathly ill, the Seer's legends are brought to light once again by his saviour, a witch named Mayrila. She believes that Candale is the fulfilment of those long forgotten prophecies. She believes that he is the Shadow Seer.

REVIEW

Set in Carnia, a fictional medieval kingdom, “The Shadow Seer” tells the story - or rather the beginning thereof - of prince Candale who is prophesied to be the long awaited Shadow Seer.  The prince had been suffering from fits and seizures for years and now - after recovering from an illness that almost killed him - he is having vivid nightmares, seeing and hearing things and starting to have visions.  Together with his friend Teveriel and his female body guard, Trellany, he sets off to visit the Mage School, White Oaks, to discover for himself what exactly those ancient prophecies have to say about him; not such an easy undertaking with a secret order seeking to murder him.

“The Shadow Seer” is a comfortably slow paced read.  The author takes time to build her fictional world and introduce her characters thoroughly.  The characters are well-crafted and realistically flawed, and especially so the main character, Candale.  Do not expect this prince to come rescue you on a white steed, as he is somewhat of a coward, preferring to keep himself safe where possible.  Still, I could not help liking him and feeling rather sorry for him as he discovers some nasty truths about his own past, has to deal with ever increasing dreams and visions, and has to tolerate his somewhat overprotective father.

This book will be a treat for readers with experience in the fantasy genre as a rather wide range of paranormal phenomena are touched upon during the course of the story.  Although “The Shadow Seer” is a slightly slow and sometimes long winded read, it certainly makes up for lost excitement with a horrific, shocking, cliff-hanger ending.   At least we know there will be more books to follow.

REVIEW: "TEMPESTUOUS" (A Twisted Lit Novel) - by Kim Askew & Amy Helmes

TEMPESTUOUS
(A Twisted Lit Novel)
by Kim Askew & Amy Helmes

PUBLISHER: Merit Press
PUBLICATION DATE: Dec 18, 2012

REVIEWED BY: Books4Tomorrow

OVERVIEW

Working off her debt to society (not to mention her father), former prep princess Miranda Prospero now wears the crown of a spinning frankfurter at her job making Hot Dog Kabobs at a Minneapolis mall. When a city-stopping blizzard strands Miranda and the mall workers with the oddest of the die-hard shoppers, she decides to wreak vengeance on the social-climbing clique who froze her out. The townies and the preps line up for battle with whatever merchandise comes to hand, while a rent-a-cop searches for what may be an armed robber. Accidentally (and literally) stuck to Caleb, a rough-cut boy with a heart of gold who would have been beneath her notice just a month before, Miranda learns more about the human heart and human nature in one night than in all of the rest of her life.

REVIEW

This is the first book ever I’ve read written by these two gifted authors and I must admit I’m uber impressed! If you’re a fan of rom-coms, you’ll undoubtedly adore this book. It’s one of those feel-good books which you read while smiling the whole time. You can just imagine the chaos that would ensue if a bunch of high school kids is locked unattended in a mall overnight and have the run of the place, right?  I can’t even begin to tell you how much fun this book was, but be prepared to laugh till you cry, wipe away a tear or two, and be touched by a story which you simply won’t be able to put down.

Whilst reading the prologue, my curiosity levels skyrocketed. What extraordinary saga of events took place in one short night as to have two characters – who clearly can’t stand each other – end up handcuffed together in a storeroom from which they can’t escape? The answer? Let’s just say, I was completely taken by surprise.

One of the most important elements that always determines whether I enjoy a book or not, is how the characters are presented to the reader and how much they are developed, if any. On this point alone, “Tempestuous” scores ten out of ten, as main- and secondary role players all received a significant amount of attention and it was clear to me that the authors put a lot of effort into establishing that connection between characters and the reader. The main character, Miranda, is the sort of character most young people today will easily relate to. She’s hip, sassy, feisty, and genuine. Despite her character and most of the supporting cast being carbon copies of characters in your average high-school teen flick, I still really liked her as she also had a naturalness and maturity about her. Though Miranda’s the star of the show, other role players who also found a spot in my heart were Caleb – with his Nicholas Cage-like broodiness; Ariel – a trusting, naïve, little ball of energy; Raj and his tech-savvy crew; and a boatload of memorable secondary characters.
Using the show-don’t-tell formula, and clever dialogue, the authors effortlessly draw the reader smack-dab into the middle of the action and drama, and trust me, there’s not one dull moment in this story with Miranda and her band of misfits’ antics in her plans for revenge. The plot is well thought out and moves at a breakneck pace, building up to an exciting and heartfelt conclusion which leaves you wanting more. Even though “Tempestuous” is a fun read, there’s depth to this story and I walked away feeling that I’ve had a truly magnificent reading experience and wishing it didn’t have to end so soon. Miranda’s fall from grace, and her subsequent journey to self-discovery of the person she truly is at her core, was written in a deeply touching way. I’m eagerly looking forward to reading the next Twisted Lit novel, and am gladly giving this superb book two thumbs up!

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.

EXCERPT

“Ow!” A painful pull on my arm yanked me back to the present. “Oh, what? Did I breathe wrong again? Look, we’re never going to be friends; that’s a given,” Caleb said, “But if we’re going to be shackled together for the foreseeable future, we might as well try to get along, at least until I can find something to bust open these cuffs.”
“Caleb’s right,” said Ariel. “You two really need to kiss and make up already.”
“Never,” I said, practically sputtering.
“It was just an expression, Miranda. Jeesh,” said my co-worker.
“I’m pretty sure Tim Burton couldn’t even think up this guy.” I glared at the offending creature, who scowled before answering in turn.
“Some of the other kids may think you walk on water, her included.” He pointed his thumb in the direction of Ariel, my arm flapping helplessly along for the ride. “But I see right through you. You’re just a private school princess with an inflated ego. You can rule as demiurge over your little island of misfit toys, but you won’t stand a chance in the real world.”
“Socially inept and bitter,” I said. “A winning combination you have there.”
Looking over at Ariel, I saw that the expression on her face resembled that of a child told on Christmas morning that Santa hadn’t made it this year because he and Mrs. Claus were embroiled in a messy divorce. No matter what I thought about Caleb (or what he thought about me), it wasn’t worth raining on Ariel’s parade. If the little sylph wanted to have some fun at the expense of my mortal enemies, I wasn’t about to stand in her way. And if it proved cathartic for me in the process, well, what was the harm in that?

BOOK BLAST & $50 GIVEAWAY: "BLOOD OATH" - by T.L. Clarke

Blood Oath by T.L. Clarke

The battle against pure evil begins. Friendships are betrayed. Rivals bond...and powers collide.

Before I discovered that I was born into a secret society called the Eternals, blood-oath Warriors sworn to track and slay the dark and evil creatures that walk the shadows of the earth, the only major thing that I, I mean we--that's me, Jessica, Rosalinda, and Zora--cared about was starting our freshman year at Vineswell Academy, the prestigious boarding school for girls.

But that was way before the blinders were cruelly ripped from our eyes and cold reality slapped us on the back of our heads with a chain of not-so-nice realities, like the fact that everything we knew about our mothers was all lies, essentially smoke and mirrors designed to hide their very secretive lives as Circles, women Warriors inside the very deadly world of the Eternal Warriors.

Excerpt

“Your wicked magic will not work on me, Eternal. The choice is simple. Break the curse.” His voice was smooth like honey, coaxing and very mesmerizing.

I laughed bitterly. “Using the enthrall spell will not ease the pain of my final decision.” Part of me was quaking in my shoes, but the other part was

irrationally calm. The conflicting emotions were tearing me apart. I looked at him with more calm than I was actually feeling as I continued, “I cannot give you what you want. The curse remains until sacrifices are made.”

What in the world was I saying? I was practically sealing my death by telling him no. The Gabrielle side of my brain was screaming to just tell him what he wanted to hear to save my life, but the soul that was currently possessing me was saying quite the opposite.

Tears slipped down my cheeks. “What shall your sacrifice be?”

“You,” he responded in a voice laced with pure venom.

I watched unflinchingly as his swords roared with flames, slicing smoothly into my body. Fire encircled me; wicked flames licked my skin without mercy, burning me from the outside in. I gasped with pain, banging against the shell of my body with all my might, but I was unwillingly trapped inside of the fiery tomb of pain. I silently begged

for escape as the heat smothered me, until the rational part of my brain screamed furiously that this was just a dream; just wake up, and it would be over. Or would it?

            “Gabi!”

I heard my name being called, but it was distorted and warped, like it was being called through a wind tunnel.

            “Gabi, wake up.”

REVIEW: "THE LIFE WE DREAM" - by JH Glaze

THE LIFE WE DREAM
by JH Glaze

REVIEWED BY: Books4Tomorrow

OVERVIEW

This story is a departure from the Horror/Thriller Genres for J.H. Glaze and explores the author's views on the enduring aspects of true love.

When Jack Bailey receives a call from an old friend, he discovers that the girl he has loved for most of his life is in hospice and only has a short time to live. Through his memories, we learn of the development of his feelings for her and how his unrequited love came to be.

Come with Jack on his journey of recollection in this bittersweet tale of hope and discovery that may well allow you to believe that anything is possible in 'The Life We Dream'.

REVIEW

“The Life We Dream” proves that this magnificent thriller/horror author can write anything he puts his mind to. I’ve read “The Spirit Box”, “NorthWest”, “Forced Intelligence” and the first two books in the Horror Challenge series by JH Glaze, which are books all written for the horror genre (which is my favorite genre, so by the way), and thus I was a little apprehensive about reading a paranormal romance by my favorite horror author. I mean, wouldn’t you also be a little skeptical if Stephen King wrote a Danielle Steele-like book? Well, turns out I had nothing to fear. This is nowhere near Danielle Steele or the likes, but at the same time it’s a far cry from JH Glaze’s usual horror/thriller themes. Of course, the only thing different about this novella really is that it’s a paranormal romance and not horror, but the writing is the same precisely crafted high quality writing as that which readers of his previous books are already accustomed to. Surprisingly – because I’m not a fan of romance books at all – I enjoyed this inimitable quick read much more than I thought I would. I also love the cover and title as it fits the story perfectly. Once again I was left in awe of how efficiently the characters were brought to life and the vivid descriptions of each setting that made me feel as though I was part of Jack and Sarah’s lives. The anecdotes they shared with one another were both whimsical and humorous, and I had to reach for the Kleenex on more than one occasion. So without giving any spoilers, all I can really say is that this is most certainly a worthwhile read and I would love to read more paranormal romance stories by this author who clearly has no limits to his creativity. Two thumbs up and loud applause to JH Glaze for once again creating another unforgettable magnum opus!

REVIEW: "FLESH AND BLOOD" (Hayle Coven Series, Book 7) - by Patti Larsen

FLESH AND BLOOD
(Hayle Coven Series, Book 7)
by Patti Larsen

REVIEWED BY: Ellen Fritz

OVERVIEW

Demon Boy

The smoke began to clear, the bubble of family magic collapsing to let it out. I choked on the taint of it, terror rising as I understood why it tasted so foul, felt like death. Blood magic. Dad lay across the pentagram, one outstretched hand marked with a thick line of red, a pool of it spreading around his flesh. No. Way. My brain would not process though my heart died a little at the sight.

A flicker of motion caught my eye, distracted me. A stranger stood there, a guy about my age, amber gaze glowing, black hair shaggy around his cheeks. “Syd,” he whispered, looking at his hands, touching his face, the demon fire fading from his eyes.

“Sassafras?”

When Syd’s father chooses to use blood magic in an attempt to return to Demonicon, he not only seals his own fate, a death sentence, he somehow transfers all of his remaining power into the demon cat, Sassafras. Transformed by Harry’s magic, Sassafras is suddenly back to his human form. Faced with a sullen and angry teen demon who refuses to help, Syd must somehow find a way to reach the other plane before Harry’s depleted body destroys itself or he is burned at the stake for his crime.

REVIEW

“Flesh and Blood”, the seventh book in the Hayle Coven series is a decidedly grimmer read than the previous six books.  When Syd's dad performs blood magic in a desperate effort to get back to Demonicon, he just about writes his own death warrant, turns Sassafras from a sassy cat into an angry demon boy and brings down the wrath of not only the Hayle Coven but also the High Council, for performing blood magic.  With Syd and her family at their weakest, predators like the Dumonts, their werewolves and the remnants of the Chosen of the Light, close in for the kill.

Again Patti Larsen succeeded in keeping me in my reading seat until I had devoured the very last page of this marvelous book.  It baffles and delights me that she is able to take the same characters, add a few, or even let a few go perhaps, and still come up with a fresh and utterly unique story every time.  In each new book the characters grow; their relationships with one another shifting and changing while new ones get a foothold in the supernatural community.

Syd, understandably, is not quite her normal smart-mouthed, snarky self in this book which is just natural with her father dying, her boyfriend still missing and her mother cracking under the strain.  Fortunately she has Galleytrot, hound of the wild hunt and her latest friend, Liam, to support her, and Sassafras - once he gets over himself - also gives a hand.   This is the first book in which Syd is required, and even encouraged, to explore and use her considerable power.  Combine witch power, sidhe power and demon power and you get butt-kickingly awesome!

Readers, red alert Kleenex warning!  I bawled my eyes out several times while reading “Flesh and Blood”.  As usual I highly recommend this book as an absolute must-read for readers of fantasy with all the usual elements: vampires, witches, werewolves, sidhe, demons and some other weird and wonderful things.  While you're considering getting “Flesh and Blood”, why not also get the previous six books in this series and find out how all this started?  A loud cheer for Ms Larsen and this wonderful 5 star book!
