GUEST POST & GIVEAWAY: "Shadow Path" - by P.L. Blair

SHADOW PATH
by P.L. Blair

OVERVIEW

An Ogre murdered with a rune-inscribed sword is just the beginning as Kat Morales, a very human police detective in Corpus Christi, Texas, and her Elf partner Tevis MacLeod follow a blood trail that leads to Pixies, necromancy and Magic of the Blackest kind … to its climax in a stronghold Between worlds, where Tevis must duel spell for spell with a former lover who wants to see her old flame extinguished permanently.

Shadow Path placed third in the Paranormal Romance Guild Reviewer’s Choice Awards (YA Category) in January 2012.

EXCERPT ofSHADOW PATHby P.L. Blair

One step over the threshold, and Tevis stopped so fast Kat nearly ran into him. “I … see what you mean. Arvandus,” he scowled over his shoulder at the Wizard, “is this wise?”
“I have cast a spell — several in fact. We are the only ones who can see it.”
Kat pushed past her partner. And stopped, gawking. An open carriage hovered in the air inches from the balcony railing. A silver-white horse, large but well-proportioned, hovered between the traces. At the reins sat an individual who appeared to be Mideastern, bearded and clad in shirt, trousers — even a turban and pointed-toed slippers — straight out of the Arabian Nights.
“… we and any other creatures from the Realms,” Tevis was saying. “Coira will hear of this.”
“I certainly hope so! I'm not expending energy on these spells just for the fun of it, you know.” Arvandus drew a breath, released it. “I suspect she knows already that a Wizard has taken an interest in her affairs — or, at the very least, is considering that possibility. But I want her to be certain, without any doubt, that not merely a Wizard, but a Wizard of the First Rank, has taken interest in her doings, and that you and Kathryn have an ally.”
He inclined his head in a slight bow to Kat, who had managed, finally, to tear her gaze from the fantastic coach and its driver.
“I do not believe Wizards impress her that greatly, Arvandus. She has killed one of you already. She will not stop at killing another.”

GUEST POST

The Shadow Path
Author's note: One of the principal characters in my fantasy/detective novel, Shadow Path, has volunteered to fill in for me on this blog:

It starts with the dead ogre. Killed with a sword inscribed with seven runes that, according to my partner, are deadly. My partner – Tevis – is an elf. He knows these things.

I'm Kat Morales, and we're both detectives with the Corpus Christi, Texas, police department. I didn't even know elves actually existed until four years ago, when Portals opened Between our world – the world of humans – and the world that Tevis calls the Realms of Magic. Quite a shock for a lot of people when that happened.

But that's another story. Tevis and I have been called in to investigate the ogre's murder, and it led us to the shop of a banshee, Maeve … and partnership with a wizard – Arvandus – an old friend of Tevis', it turns out … and a confrontation with a pixie …

Forget Tinkerbell. The only thing real pixies have in common with Tinkerbell are the small size, and don't let that fool you. Real pixies are blood-thirsty little flesh-eaters.

But the one that tried to kill me was just a flunky for Coira, another elf – a nasty specimen whose real intent was to kill Tevis. They'd been lovers once – I don't even care to think about how long ago that was in human years – but Tevis left her when she turned to black magic. Death magic. What Tevis calls the “shadow path.”

So now Coira wants Tevis dead. And to get his attention, she's trailing a string of corpses behind her, a trail that leads to her stronghold between worlds. Tevis and I have to go after her. And Tevis has to call on magic – wizardry that he gave up thousands of years ago. He has to fight Coira in a duel of spells. And if he loses …

He dies.

REVIEW

I was enchanted by the cover of this book and couldn’t wait to start reading it. I can’t say that I haven’t read similar plot lines before, but I did find this one quite enjoyable and incredibly entertaining. This was an action-packed, exhilarating read with loads of surprising twists.
I especially liked the fast pace at which the story moved and nowhere did I get the feeling that the plot was being dragged out. All the characters were very well developed and focus was placed on the strong bonds between Renee and her parents I believe helped shape the person she became by the end of the book and which also gave her the strength and confidence to conquer the dangers she was forced to face.

What I enjoyed most about “Blood Magic” is that the main character is a powerful female lead who doesn’t need men to fight her battles for her. With her magic and fighting skills she is a force to be reckoned with, yet she also has a vulnerable side to her that invokes empathy from the reader. Her courage, tenacity and strong morals make her a character to be admired. But at the same time, I also felt that she needed to lighten up, get a sense of humor and stop behaving like a brat.

Tons of good and evil supernatural entities are introduced throughout the book, and the suspense keeps building to breaking point as Renee faces off against one malevolent character after another. A good balance was brought to these characters with the Mystics, whom I simultaneously liked and disliked. My absolute favorite character of course was Tristan. I just adored his sense of humor and sarcasm!

“Blood Magic” is the first book in a fabulous new series which promises its readers hours of undiluted reading bliss. The superb writing, magnificent characters and heart-stopping action will have you battling to hold on to the edge of your seat as this book takes your imagination to new dimensions, and which makes it a definite 4 star must-read!

INTERVIEW with ROBIN WALDROP

Q: What inspired you to write “Ties to the Blood Moon”?

A: It started out as one of those crazy dreams. You know, the kind that you just can’t get out of your mind. Once I realized it wasn’t going to go away until I wrote about it, I knew I would have to create something far different than what was already out there…so I did.

Q: How did you come up with the title?

A: It just came to me one day. You know how you remember having a dream, but can’t remember about what? Well, that’s what happened to me. So, as I tried to remember what the dream was the title just popped into my head. I googled it just knowing it had been used several times, and to my surprise, I couldn’t find another book anywhere with the same title.

Q: Who designed the cover and how much input did you have regarding the design?

A: The awesome Claudia McKinney-phatpuppyart.com designed the cover. I simply told her what I had in mind and a little while later she emailed me the cover. As soon as I saw it I fell in love. She is a wonderful artist and extremely easy to work with. She is also designing the cover for book 2 of the series.

Q: Which of your characters in “Ties to the Blood Moon” are your favourite and why?

A: That’s an unfair question because I so love them all, but if I had to choose, I would say William. He’s mysterious with a touch of bad-boy thrown in ... lol!

Q: Is “Ties to the Blood Moon” your first book?

A: No, it’s actually my second. My first book is shelved right now. I hope to get it published in the next month or so.

Q: What was the hardest part of writing this book?

A: The beginning. Starting any book is hard for me. I probably wrote the opening twenty times before I found something I could live with.

Q: Did you learn anything from writing “Ties to the Blood Moon” and what was it?

A: I would have to say yes. I learned a lot about grammar and POV writing this second book.

Q: What makes “Ties to the Blood Moon” any different from other paranormal books with the same theme?

A: Some people have said, “It’s just like TWILIGHT.” When in fact it really isn’t other than the fact there is weres and vamps, and a love triangle. BUT, if you look at any love story you will find a love triangle.

Q: What are your current projects?

A: Of course book 2 of the series, but also I am working on some short stories I will be releasing in the near future. When I finish book 2 of the series I am going to take a short break from it and start my Zombie love story. Can you imagine ... a Zombie in love?

Q: Can you share a little of your current work with us?

A: In between writing book 2, I am working on outlining a prequel to book 1. A story about the chief’s family. That should be interesting.

Q: Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

A: Winners never quit, and quitters never win! You must always keep writing regardless of how bad it gets at times. It will pay off at some point. And also, never stop reading. A great writer always reads more than she writes.

QUICK REVIEW: "Golden Blood" (Time Spirit Trilogy Book 1) by Melissa Pearl

GOLDEN BLOOD” (TIME SPIRIT TRILOGY BOOK 1)
by Melissa Pearl

REVIEWED BY: Ellen Fritz

OVERVIEW

Gemma Hart never knows when her father is going to whisk her back in time. Her toes start tingling and she has a few minutes to find a secret haven where she can disintegrate and appear in another time and place. While “across the line,” her training and skills are put to the test as she completes a mission that will change history for the lucky few her father has selected.

Gemma's parents are adamant that secrecy is paramount to her family’s safety. If people knew what they were capable of, they could be "used and abused", as her mother always says. Afraid she might accidentally utter the truth and break the ancient oath of her people, Gemma spends her school days as a loner. Only one thing can throw her sheltered life askew... Harrison Granger.

Harrison never expected to talk to the strange Hart girl, but after a brief encounter he can't stop thinking about her. He begins a campaign to chisel away her icy veneer and is met with unexpected consequences. As he slowly wins this girl over, he enters a surreal world that has him fighting to keep his newfound love and his life.

REVIEW

This totally awesome young adult paranormal romance captivated me from the first sentence. It had me alternately breaking out in goose bumps, sitting up in anticipation and smiling at the sensitive romantic scenes. Not being able to put it down, I read through it in one sitting.

The kids at school call Gemma Heart a freak. Those she helps think she is an angel and Harrison Granger thinks she is the most beautiful and sweetest girl he has ever met.  With a secret that has to be kept at all costs, a strict training schedule, school work and sudden dangerous missions into the past, Gemma has almost no hope of ever having friends or a meaningful relationship with a boyfriend. Harrison Granger however, thinks differently and makes it his mission to convince Gemma that not only can he deal with her unusual calling, but also that he can love her.

The characters in this book - especially the main characters and their family members - truly seem to come alive in the expert hands of the author. That both main characters had perfectly normal, happy families was a pleasant change from the usual tragic circumstances in which so many key characters in other books find themselves.
Harrison is any girl's dream guy. No wonder Gemma is willing to break a two millennia old oath not to lose him. The budding romance between Gemma and Harrison is sweet and beautiful and tastefully described.  Gemma's family however, is not very happy with the fact that she is dating a boy who is not one of their kind.  I was extremely impressed by the mature way in which the lovers dealt with this.

“Golden Blood” is definitely not just a romance. As we follow Gemma from one dangerous mission to another, the suspense builds until Harrison gets involved.  Then it becomes a nail-biting journey full of action and heart-stopping terror. It is a fantastic story which deserves more than its 5 stars and will have readers look forward to the next book in the series.

QUICK REVIEW: "Forced Intelligence" - by JH Glaze

FORCED INTELLIGENCE
by JH Glaze

REVIEWED BY: Books4Tomorrow

OVERVIEW

What if we could boost the intelligence of humans through a process of brain stimulation using frequencies close to those of the average mobile phone?

Doctors Connor and Shafer have been working for years to perfect the treatment, but on the day of the experiment, a careless lab technician makes a mistake that jeopardizes the lives of everyone in the facility.

With the military closing in, the clock is ticking, and when their time runs out...

A fast paced short story from JH Glaze.

REVIEW

As a rule, I don’t read short stories. It’s just not my thing. But because I’ve read two other marvelous books written by this incredible author – “The Spirit Box” and “NorthWest” - I decided to give this one a go. After finishing reading it in the space of an hour, I wasn’t actually surprised that I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as quality writing of the highest standard is exactly what I have come to expect from author JH Glaze, and as always, he didn’t disappoint.

Overall I found this short story to be simultaneously entertaining and daunting. I can’t tell you much about the characters, setting, plot, etc, without giving any spoilers, but what I can say is this: it gets you thinking. Even the impressive cover art sent chills up my spine and had me envisioning scientific experiments gone wrong.

I greatly appreciate books where I can walk away with a million thoughts in my head as to the different endings the story could’ve had. The scariest question for me was “but what if…..?” Terrifying truths, a dollop of irony and a laugh or two are only some of the elements that make up this quick read. No matter what your genre preference, “Forced Intelligence” will undoubtedly have an impact on the reader in some way or another. I thus give it a well-deserved 5 stars!

QUICK REVIEW: "Chronic Fear" - by Scott Nicholson

CHRONIC FEAR
by Scott Nicholson

REVIEWED BY: Ellen Fritz

OVERVIEW

The phone call isn’t the first threat Dr. Alexis Morgan has received. Not by a long shot. It is, however, the first time she escaped the taunting voice only to find her neurobiology lab at the University of North Carolina being raided. Alexis thought she and her husband, Mark, were finally moving beyond the horrors of the Monkey House, sight of the notorious, top-secret drug trials for a powerful personality-altering drug that stole so many innocent lives? But now Alexis's research into the drug's effects has caught the attention of a shadowy government agency anxious to use the drug for its own nefarious purposes. When people begin dying, Alexis knows it is only a matter of time before the men behind the conspiracy try to silence her. She and Mark flee into the mountains of North Carolina, seeking refuge with the other survivors from the Monkey House. There, as government agents close in, the survivors must also battle the demons within their own minds if they hope to keep the drugs out of enemy hands.

REVIEW

In this sequel to “Liquid Fear”, Scott Nicholson gives us another page-turning, nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat thriller.  Eleven years after the initial drug tests and one year since the Monkey House had been razed to the ground, the five remaining subjects are still being threatened.  The threats however, are not only in the phone calls and emails these subjects receive, but also in their minds as the lingering side effects of the drugs are still lurking and subtly changing them.  But, are the drugs only inside the subjects or are they still secretly available?

This is the story of people tormented by things over which they have almost no control; of dedicated scientists who just would not let go; of a woman trying to save her husband from complete insanity; and an ambitious politician who wants to be the next president.  Bring into this a fanatic, subversive man with his eye on the vice presidency, the CIA, the FBI and the National Clandestine Service, and the situation becomes unbelievably volatile.

Once again I found myself sweating with suspense as the story built up to the inevitably violent and highly unpredictable ending.  Most of the time I was asking myself who the good guys in this story were, as even those who seem to be victims also have their own nefarious hidden agendas.  The author gives the reader a good look into the thoughts of all the main characters - the malice in the minds of the ambitious; and the paranoia, rage and delusions in the confused minds of those with the drugs still working in them.
As the point of view shifts with every new chapter, the suspense builds in leaps and bounds.

I was extremely impressed with the way in which the author expertly brings together the numerous key characters for the climactic end of the story.  Although I would suggest that readers read the prequel, “Liquid Fear”, before this book, the author gives enough back story for “Chronic Fear” to be read as a stand-alone novel.

Five stars and three cheers for this excellent book by an outstanding author!
