REVIEW: "BABY TALK" (Book 1) - by Mike Wells

BABY TALK” (Book 1)
by Mike Wells

REVIEWED BY: Books4Tomorrow

OVERVIEW

In this creepy horror novel, Neal Becker is convinced that his 5 month old baby daughter can talk. But that's impossible...isn't it? Except that Neal didn't really want to get married in the first place and pushed his wife for an abortion. And now, Baby Natasha knows it. She's out to get Neal, or so he believes. Join the two in a terrifying battle for survival that will make your blood run cold!

REVIEW

I finished this book in about three hours, and loved it from start to finish. The prologue gripped me and the rest of the book had me turning the pages as fast as I could. Although this is supposed to be a horror story, I didn’t find it that scary. I thought the baby was cute, and I really felt sorry for her parents. Bad luck seems to follow them everywhere they go. There are quite a few shocking surprises in this story and even though it’s a quick read, it is apparent that the author put in effort to create characters with depth and keep the suspense building throughout the plot. The only let-down for me is the fact that I have to wait until I have book two to read what happens at the end. Yep. You guessed it. Cliff-hanger ending.

I really love the cover for this book and I can say with certainty that this is a terrific read. I’ll definitely be reading more books by Mike Wells!

REVIEW: "WINDY CITY OF THE DEAD" (Dark Bites, Part 1) - by Robert Ropars

“WINDY CITY OF THE DEAD”
(Dark Bites, Part 1)
by Robert Ropars

REVIEWED BY: Books4Tomorrow

OVERVIEW

Crow needs to get out of Chicago fast with just her wits and any weapons she can find. But between her and escape are hordes of brain-chomping zombies spreading their plague across the city and through her condo building. 52 floors to go...

REVIEW

After reading “848” (Dark Bites, Part 4) and being very impressed by the author’s writing and storytelling skills, I was eager to read “Windy City of the Dead”, and also because I’m a big fan of zombie- and post-apocalyptic books.

This short story isn’t so much a post-apocalyptic novella, but is mainly centred on the zombie-theme, which of course, I enjoyed immensely. If you’re looking for a story with depth and characters you can relate to, then give this one a miss. What I liked most about “848” was that I felt sorry for the main character, but in this story I felt absolutely nothing for the chain-smoking protagonist. I didn’t like or dislike her, but at least she was fearless and I admired her courage.

Of course my favorite parts of the plot were the zombie-bashing, but the bit in the story that freaked me out the most, amongst others – and which had me glued to the pages – was the little undead girl terrorizing the main character who is trying to make her escape from the 52nd floor of her apartment building with the lights constantly going out.

If blood, guts, splattering brains, mechanical clown toys, and a katana-wielding woman don’t give you the heeby jeebies, then go ahead and spend a worthwhile fifteen minutes of your time reading this suspenseful, gore-drenched novella. I especially recommend it for readers who are new to this genre.

REVIEW: "SCARY MARY" - by S.A. Hunter

 SCARY MARY
by S.A. Hunter

REVIEWED BY: Books4Tomorrow

OVERVIEW

Mary just wants to be left alone, but the cheerleaders, jocks, guidance counselors, and ghosts won't stop harrassing her. When a new boy starts school, he surprises Mary by befriending her. That's a rare thing for the school freak, but her unusual abilities put a rift in their budding friendship when Mary has to tell Cy that his home is haunted and not by Casper, the friendly ghost.

REVIEW

There’s really nothing scary about “Scary Mary”. She’s a typically misunderstood goth-kid, who is being bullied at school by all the usual suspects, and shunned because of her unusual talent for being able to communicate with ghosts.

An interesting, yet predictable plot with few twists; this is something I’d recommend for YA readers new to the horror genre. I really liked the two main characters and I especially enjoyed the author’s sense of humor, and often burst out laughing at the banter between the two friends and their sarcastic interactions with the most popular girl in school.

Overall, “Scary Mary” is a clean, enjoyable, quick read, suitable for readers of all ages. No profanity or explicit content, and violence are kept to a minimum. I’m looking forward to reading the sequel, titled “Stalking Shadows”.

REVIEW: "44" - by Jools Sinclair

44
by Jools Sinclair

REVIEWED BY: Books4Tomorrow

OVERVIEW

Last year after falling through the ice, seventeen-year-old Abby Craig woke up from death - but she woke into a world she barely recognizes. She can't see colors, memories have been erased, and her friends all hate her. And then there's Jesse, who she loves, but who refuses to forgive her the one mistake she made long ago.

Just when she thinks it can't get any worse, the visions begin. In them, she sees a faceless serial killer roaming the streets. While the police believe that there have been a lot of accidents in town lately, Abby knows differently. And she soon realizes that it's up to her to find him. But to stop him, she'll have to confront more than just the killer. She'll have to face something else that was lost in those dark waters: the truth.

REVIEW

This book started out really interesting, but soon lost momentum. It’s a very average plot with no real twists, and although the author tries very hard to place the reader’s suspicion of whodunnit on the wrong character, the “twist” really wasn’t much of a revelation. I can’t say I connected with the characters as not much was done to fluff them out, and no effort was made to get the reader to feel anything for them. The only redeeming quality for me – and the reason for the three-star rating - was the little surprise right at the end. I’m happy I got this as a free download and though I’m recommending it with three stars, there was nothing in this story that motivated me to read the other four books in this series.

REVIEW: "THE FIGHTER" (Scarlet Night Series) - by Nathan Squiers

THE FIGHTER
(Scarlet Night Series)
by Nathan Squiers

REVIEWED BY: Books4Tomorrow

OVERVIEW

Zane's life is in the dumps…

And, lately, subjecting his body to anything that might help him forget has become all he knows.

As the realization that he has no purpose and nothing left to strive for, he's forced to admit what he's tried so hard to forget:

Gregori is dead.

With the ghost of what he was looming over what he's become and his promiscuous and self-destructive life spiraling out of control, the monster beneath his skin urges him to destroy.

With an urge to destroy pulling him ever-closer to the edge of chaos, what future exists for this once-proud fighter?

REVIEW

I can see why Nathan Squiers refers to himself as the literary dark prince. This is a first-class piece of writing and I was really impressed with all the wordplay and comparisons throughout this short story, but the profanity was a little too much for me. I liked Zoey’s character but had a hard time connecting with Zane’s one-dimensional character. Although I enjoyed reading this novella and am an ardent fan of Nathan’s writing, I don’t think it will be to everybody’s liking.

REVIEW: "THE LONG LOST" (Hayle Coven Series, book 5) - by Patti Larsen

THE LONG LOST
(Hayle Coven Series, book 5)
by Patti Larsen

REVIEWED BY: Ellen Fritz

OVERVIEW

A Dumont Witch

“That talk you promised me?” I hated myself for throwing it in Quaid’s face, but I couldn’t help myself, couldn’t. I’d waited for this moment, for him, we’d been through so much together it just wasn’t fair.

Wasn’t.

“Things are complicated now.” Quaid looked away from me, hands clenching. “I just wanted to let you know I was okay. That I found my family. And to tell you I’m happy.”

Syd’s worst fear has come true. Quaid found his family, the Dumont coven, and has chosen them over her. Not to be outdone, her friends are all going their separate ways, her solid normal foundation falling out from beneath her. When the Dumonts come for a visit, Syd’s family history unfolds, leading her to discover things that shake her beliefs about herself and those she loves while struggling to accept she’s lost her one true love.

REVIEW

“The Long Lost”, book five in the Hayle Coven Series, is definite proof that the series is getting better with each book.  Syd, now with her demon and a sidhe princess Shaylee inside her to strengthen her magically, is trying to enjoy the summer holidays which is proving to be anything but a holiday.  Several of her friends are leaving town, an evil grudge bearing coven arrives and, as usual, her friends and family are being targeted.  Assisted by her family and her pets/friends, Galleytrot, hound of the wild hunt, and her demon cat, Sassafras, she once again has to kick butt to save and protect those who are dear to her.  Of course the cheer squad - never her friends - has to complicate matters.

Sydlynn Hayle is one of the most realistic main characters I have ever met in the numerous books I have read.  A very normal rebellious teenager, she has moments of self pity, self doubt and a fierce protectiveness toward her friends and family.  Her thoughts and inner dialogue are extremely natural but most of the time also hilariously funny.  The author allows her characters to grow throughout the series thus keeping it fresh and believable within the paranormal setting.  The witty dialogue, and especially Syd's smart mouth, had me smiling despite the nonstop action and suspense.

The title of the book is highly appropriate as old grudges from the Hayle coven's past surface and enemies thought to be dead, gone or powerless, reappear.  With every new book in the series the author finds a new and refreshing story to tell. “The Long Lost” has a tender, bitter-sweet romantic twist for those who like a bit of romance in a story.

I won’t hesitate to recommend this book as an absolute must-read for readers of all ages.  I would, however, advise that you read the first four books in the Hayle Coven series before you read this one. Believe me, you'll love them all!  Thumbs up, five stars and many cheers for an excellent book and a wonderful author!

REVIEW: "ZOMBIFIED" - by Lyra McKen

ZOMBIFIED
by Lyra McKen

REVIEWED BY: Books4Tomorrow

OVERVIEW

Cassie is a typical teenager. She’s crushing on a boy and trying to make it through high school. It’s a typical day of classes when all hell breaks loose. Forced to run and hide the situation just keeps getting worse. She makes a mistake and soon becomes infected. She meets others like her and together they sent out to find a cure. Is their fate already sealed? Can they find a cure before it’s too late? See what happens through the eyes of the infected when Cassie tells you how Zombies are people too.

REVIEW

The first chapter had me wondering what I was letting myself in for. Never had I read a book from a zombie’s point of view. In fact, I’ve never had any sympathy for zombies – until now.

The plot is original and moves at a fast pace. Paranormal romance fanatics will enjoy the romance in this quick read. I especially had a good laugh at the scene where they were on a high-speed chase from the police, racing through a cornfield and then a forest, and zombie Rose on the back of the truck being whipped to no end by cornstalks and tree branches. Imagine me lying in bed, trying to laugh as quietly as I can so as not to wake hubby, at the author’s tongue-in-cheek humorous description of the priceless look on Rose’s face that makes you want to double over with laughter. For this alone I highly recommend the book.

The kindle version I received for review needs to be formatted and edited some more, but overall this is a really nice story which I recommend for YA fans new to the zombie genre.

REVIEW: "PLEASE DO FEED THE ANIMALS ZOO" - by Tabitha Short

PLEASE DO FEED THE ANIMALS ZOO
by Tabitha Short

REVIEWED BY: Books4Tomorrow

OVERVIEW

A man decides to take his teenage son to the new zoo in town. The zoo exhibits contain only the most ferocious animals and advertises visitors get to feed the animals. But there’s something the zoo goers weren’t informed of: the animals will be eating them. Because of a small glitch, the man and his son discover the sinister secret before they become the food.

REVIEW

A new twist on a zoo visit, this short story was something completely different from what I’ve ever read before! But if I say too much, I’ll be giving it all away so I’ll keep my review short. This is not a read for squeamish readers, so if you can’t handle gore, then give this one a miss. For hardcore horror fans – such as myself – this novella is a delightful little treat. No plot twists, character development or doe-eyed lovers. Nope. Purely sixteen pages of all-out nail biting thrills and chills. A quick read that shouldn’t take more than fifteen minutes of your time, “Please DO Feed the Animals Zoo” will leave you thinking of zoos much differently.

MAGIC MURDERER

OVERVIEW

The world of magic is unified by a single truth: "The arts have tainted you."
For one man--a man corrupted by power and driven by a lust to kill--the price of his pursuits for power has become both a reason and a means of destroying lives. As this madman quickly discovers, the potential for murder and maiming are almost infinite when a flick of the wrist or a blink of an eye can rip flesh and snap bones, and the creative means of slaughtering innocents is a blood-red and limitless sky.
With fragmented thoughts and distorted truths festering in the twisted mind of this magical maniac, a sadistic killing spree ensues. As his campaign of carnage takes its toll on a family there seems to be no end to the bloodshed in sight…
… until he finds himself bathed in a Crimson Shadow.

REVIEW

Shocking and deliciously twisted – the way horror should be. I didn’t even try to make sense of this story, but the author’s dark humor wasn’t lost on me, and the main character’s deteriorating mind was written really well. Blood, guts, puppies and ducks… Nathan Squiers, I want more!

WICKED PAINTS

OVERVIEW

Elizabeth has a gift. Every night, allowing her mind to travel into dark and mysterious places, she sees a world of vampires and creatures of darkness; a world she knows is real and feels compelled to paint.
But her gift--her talent--is going to be put to the ultimate test when she dreams of Xander Stryker.

Driven by a need to depict her new subject in all the horror and splendor that she felt in her dream, she resorts to the unimaginable. Her need will pull her into the depraved depths of the very supernatural world that she'd dreamt of for so long.

Is her mind prepared for the darkness of the unseen world, and is her body capable of withstanding her own unnatural motivations to create the perfect portrait...

A portrait of the legacy of the Crimson Shadow.

REVIEW

I really enjoyed this novella. Delving into the darkest part of an artist’s mind, this is a superb and imaginative piece of writing which will stay with the reader long after reading the last sentence.  And I bet you’ll never look at spatulas the same again.

JUST ANOTHER NIGHT

OVERVIEW

A graveyard in the dead of night.

While most would avoid such an eerie setting, for three friends looking for a safe place to toke up, it is the perfect place to get high without getting caught. Unfortunately, for these stoners, fate has given them more to worry about than nosey cops.

In the blink of a bloodshot eye, all hell breaks loose... literally.

As forces beyond the friends' perception and control turn a calm night in a marijuana-haze into a terror-filled bloodbath all hope seems lost. But there's far deadlier beings roaming through the headstones, and a Crimson Shadow soon eclipses the carnage.

Talk about the ultimate buzz-kill!

REVIEW

Twisted and horrific; fans of the horror genre will love this. I read it in less than twenty minutes, and can now warn my kids why smoking pot in a graveyard is dangerous. A really short and quick read, I recommend this novella for readers of the Crimson Shadow series as yet another example of how Xander Stryker kicks butt.

WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS

OVERVIEW

Few would see Las Vegas--"Sin City": the gambling capitol and center for greed, lust, gluttony, and debauchery--as an ideal place for a dedicated Christian to vacation. However, with her closest friends promising a relaxing getaway and an insistent husband, Rachel is given no way to avoid the trip. Besides, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

At least that's what they say!

But when her vacation takes an unexpected turn and finds her in the dark clutches of unholy forces, Rachel has no choice but to carry her Hellish burden out of Sin City and back into the loving embrace of her unaware and unsuspecting family.

Is Rachel strong enough to resist the dark forces and see that her family remains free of their curse? Or will her faith and dedication be warped beyond repair as a Crimson Shadow envelopes her world?

REVIEW

I really enjoyed this short story, even though I’m sick and tired of the vampire theme. What happened to the main character was unfortunate and sad, and I felt genuinely sorry for her. I don’t know if I would’ve done the same if I was in her shoes, but it does get you thinking.

VICTIM

OVERVIEW

"The scars we wear are a constant reminder of what we've suffered through; of what we've survived. But the scars of every fight, every sacrifice, and every mistake are only skin-deep."

For Xander Stryker, the "Crimson Shadow", this truth is all-too obvious, and though his vampire body will not scar easily, he still wears the reminders left behind from his human life. And while it's simple to see the history of abuse and self-destruction on Xander's body, it's the scars he wears on the inside that haunt him the most.

Despite having left the human race in a previous life, with a little motivation from a helpless victim, he may still be able to maintain his humanity.

REVIEW

In my opinion, this novella serves as the perfect introduction to Xander Stryker, and also the Crimson Shadow series. It gave me a glimpse into this character, which I’ve grown to like in the span of a few pages, and although I’m no longer a big fan of vampires, I’m curious now to read more of him in the Crimson Shadow books.
